Patch installation advice

Use Table 2 to make a patch installation decision. The following are installation advice options for a
patch version:

• Required—The patch version resolves major issues and must be installed.

• Optional—The patch version resolves occasional issues and can be installed at discretion of the
network administrator.

• Restricted—The patch version resolves customer-specific issues and is intended only for the
target customer.

Typically, a patch version resolves both issues that were resolved by its history versions and issues
that were newly found. However, the installation advice for a patch version takes into account only
issues that were newly found.

Installing the hot patch

Preparations
CAUTION:
• The hot patch must match the device model and system software. Otherwise, hot patching will fail.
• If a card has been patched, you must uninstall the previous patch before you can install the new patch.

A hot patch is a .bin file that contains patch files released at the same time for different cards.

It is typically named in the form product name-platform version-software version numberHpatch

number, such as 6127XLG-CMW710-SYSTEM-WEAK-R2432P06H12.bin.

Before installation, read the patch release notes carefully to get clear information about patch type,
number of patches, and patch usage guidelines, and save the hot patch into the root directory of the
flash on the active.

If the free storage space is not enough for storing the hot patch, delete undesired files with the
delete/unreserved command. In IRF mode, you need to check the free storage space on the master
device and standby device to make sure that each device has enough space to store the hot patch.

The delete /unreserved file-url command deletes a file permanently and the action cannot be
undone.

The delete file-url command moves a file to the recycle bin and the file still occupies storage space.
To permanently delete the file from the recycle bin, execute the reset recycle-bin command in the
original directory of the file.
