Modal and Linear Static Analyses in Inspire With SimSolid Solver PDF

This document describes how to perform modal, linear static frontal impact, and torsional analyses in Altair Inspire using the SimSolid solver. It outlines the steps to 1) prepare the model by importing geometry and cleaning up unnecessary points/curves, 2) set the solver preferences to SimSolid, 3) apply materials, 4) perform modal analysis by running normal modes, 5) setup frontal impact analysis with point constraints and an impact force, 6) setup torsional analysis with rear point constraints and front torsional forces, and 7) post-process the results for each analysis type.

Modal and Linear Static Analyses in Inspire with SimSolid solver

1. Preparing the model

After importing the geometry file (ex: step file) in the latest Altair Inspire software, delete the
unnecessary points and curves which are outside the model.

or

2. Setting the preferences

Click on File >> Preferences >> Run options >> change the Analysis solver from OptiStruct to
SimSolid >> Apply >> Ok

3. Applying Material
Right click on the Part/Assembly and choose the required material. Here, I am choosing Steel (AISI
4142)
4. Modal Analysis
First, let us perform modal analysis on this model. To do this, click on the play button in the Analyze
ribbon under Structure menu. And, give a name “Modal Analysis”, click on Normal Modes, then
select the second option and select the Number of modes as 9, select Custom and click Run.
After the analysis is complete, click “view now" to view the model analysis results like frequencies,
mode shapes and strain energy densities in different modes.

5. Frontal Impact Analysis

Constraints:
To apply Constraints in a model, click on the following:
“Structure” Menu >> “Loads" >> “Supports”
Apply point constraints for the hard points on either side of the rear as shown below. Use Shift
button to apply point constraint.

Now, apply point constraints for the hard points on either side of the front as shown below.
Lastly, apply 2 point constraints near the steering as shown below.

Rename the load case as “Frontal Impact Analysis”.

Force:
To apply forces in a model, click on the following:
“Structure” Menu >> “Loads" >> “Force”

Apply an impact force of 4000N on the front most member as shown below.
Solving:
Now, to perform the analysis, click on the play button in the Analyze ribbon under Structure menu.
And, give a name “Frontal Impact Analysis” and click Run.

Post-processing:
After the analysis is complete, click “view now" to view the analysis results like displacement, von-
mises stress, etc.
6. Torsional Analysis
Right click on the existing load case and create a new load case as shown. Name it as Torsional
Analysis. Hide the previous load case while working on this load case.
Constraints:
To apply Constraints in a model, click on the following:
“Structure” Menu >> “Loads" >> “Supports”

To apply same constraint on multiple surfaces, use Ctrl and select all the required faces in
the rear as shown below.

Force:
To apply forces in a model, click on the following:
“Structure” Menu >> “Loads" >> “Force”

Apply torsion load of 3000N vertically upwards and downwards on either side of the front
lower member respectively as shown in the images below.

Solving:
Now, to perform the analysis, click on the play button in the Analyze ribbon under Structure menu.
And, give a name “Torsional Analysis” and click Run.
Post-processing:
After the analysis is complete, click “view now" to view the analysis results like displacement, von-
mises stress, etc.
