FANTINE. I was practicing my part, extra, in the hall...
GARBIELA. What happened?
FANTINE. She tapped me on the shoulder. She said she needed me
as the assistant stage manager, so I’m not in the play anymore.
GARBIELA. Are you sure?
(FANTINE’s too upset to answer.)
GARBIELA. (Fury filled steps:) Stepstepstepstepstepstep. (To
STAUNCHER:) What were you thinking?
STAUNCHER. Excuse me?
GARBIELA. You took away the part of the one person who wants it
more than anything!
STAUNCHER. Speak less loudly.
GARBIELA. Fantine’s been working so hard, and really? You’re just
gonna take away her part? You’re not a playwright by the way. The
Turn of the Screw with Audience Participation is the single stupidest play
I’ve ever seen. If Fantine’s not in the play, I don’t want to be in the play.
STAUNCHER. Who’s this Fantine?
GARBIELA. Fantine! Fantine whose part you took away. Fantine.
STAUNCHER. There’s no Fantine, except the famous one a long
time ago. Colin F. The F was for Fantine. The girl who started the fire.
GARBIELA. No, the student here. Right now!
STAUNCHER. You need to leave.
GARBIELA. But you know who I’m talking about.
STAUNCHER. You lost me at “single stupidest.”
GARBIELA. The girl who started the fire died.
STAUNCHER. Yes. She did.
GARBIELA. (To the audience:) And suddenly my head felt light.
