The Impacts of Poor Communication in Workplace

Poor communication in the workplace can lead to two major negative impacts: decreasing productivity and increasing costs. When communication is unclear or ineffective, employees may misunderstand instructions, leading to errors and lower productivity. Conflicts between employees due to poor communication also reduce productivity. Additionally, miscommunication can slow down business projects and cause delays, extending deadlines and increasing costs. This may result in dissatisfied customers and loss of business. Overall, effective communication is important for business success by maintaining productivity and controlling costs.

The Impacts of Poor Communication in Workplace

Effective communication is a prominent aspect in any workplace as it decides the

growth of a particular business. Throughout the process of dealing with business challenges.,
good communication can help the company team, which is between the leader and the
employees by building their relationship, minimizing likelihood clash of views and ultimately,
the team will be able to reach a consensus. Nevertheless, according to Grammarly Business
report, effective communication at work is a growing challenge for U.S. businesses and
workers. Other than that, as reported by Saran (2019), the statistic of a YouGov poll where the
respondents are small to medium-sized enterprises (SME) and 1,012 non-managerial UK staff
for Microsoft, shows that workers are stressed about inadequate communication. Ineffective
communication may happen spontaneously when workers could not overcome some
communication difficulties in a conversation, for instance, choosing the right words so that
others will not feel offended, and feeling unsure of the right tone when communicating. The
Grammarly Business report entitled “State of Business Communication: The Path to
Productivity Performance and Profit” has inspired me to write the critical response for this
issue. In my point of views, I strongly agree that miscommunication can lead to massive
negative impact on leaders, workers, and the future of a company. In this critical response, I
will be discussing two impacts of poor communication in workplace which are decreasing
productivity and increasing cost.

Firstly, decreasing workforce productivity is one of the significant negative impacts

of poor communication (“The cost of bad communication is…”, 2022). When communication
does not run smoothly where, it is unclear or not effective, proper direct message and
instruction are unlikely to be received by employees, yet it can lead to misunderstandings and
errors. Employees could not get a clear instruction or direction; hence, it turns out to poor
productivity as the flow of work is being affected. Besides that, conflicts between employees
also are a result of poor communication, which then leads to poor productivity Adeyemi, J. K.
(2022). Workplace conflicts happen when every employee have opposing ideas, personality
clash, at the same time, they could not communicate effectively. I strongly believe that things
get done when everyone are willing to communicate and achieving a consensus. In a
workplace, not everyone is born to be an effective communicator, as everyone has different
communication styles, different level of knowledge. According to news reported by The
Myers-Briggs Company, poor communication is the main cause of workplace conflict.
Employees’ performance significantly affects workforce productivity. It is undeniable that
employees’ performance depends on the quality of communication. In short, poor
communication at workplace can decrease workforce productivity.

Besides decreasing workforce productivity, another negative impact of poor

communication is increasing cost of business. Miscommunication at workplace will slow
down the process of doing business’s project. This happens because employees could not
communicate effectively and yet the deadline for the project will be extended. Extended
deadline will then increase the company’s cost as it will cause dissatisfaction of customer.
Ultimately, there is high probability that company may lose their customer. In order to
provide maximum satisfaction of customer towards company project, reducing the company
profit is necessary. Besides that, company may need to provide professional communicator to
enhance the communication skills of employees. Hence, it will increase the cost of company.

In conclusion, poor communication at workplace will lead to two massive negative

impacts, which are lowering workforce productivity and increasing the cost of company. It
can be seen that how important good communication skill is. Employees should always
improve their communication skill to ensure the business project can be done on time and yet
maximize the company profit.
