III. READING COMPREHENSION
A. Air pollution is by far the most harmful form of pollution in our environment. Air
pollution is caused by the injurious smoke emitted by cars, buses, trucks, trains, and
factories. Even smoke from burning leaves and cigarettes is harmful to the
environment causing a lot of damage to man and the atmosphere. Evidence of
increasing air pollution is seen in lung cancer.

Water pollution caused industrial waste products released into lakes, rivers, and other
water bodies, has made marine life no longer hospitable. Humans pollute water with
large scale disposal of garbage and other household waste. In many rural areas one
can still find people bathing and cooking in the same water, making it incredibly
filthy. Noise pollution, soil pollution and light pollution too are the damaging the
environment at an alarming rate. Noise pollution include aircraft noise, noise of cars,
buses, and trucks, vehicle horns, loudspeakers and industry noise which are extremely
harmful for the environment.

True or False
1. The passage mentions three kinds of pollution. F
2. Lung cancer is a result of air pollution. T
3. Only waste products in industry make water polluted. F
4. The noise from the factories also do harm to the environment. T
Choose the best answer
5. It is __________ that increasing air pollution is the cause of lung cancer.
A. rumored B. thought C. proved D. said
6. The phrase rural areas in the passage means__________.
A. inside the city B. the neighborhood C. downtown D. the countryside

B. Last week, our class had a discussion on how to protect the environment. and we
came up with some interesting, practical suggestions. Some students suggested using
banana leaves to wrap food in order to save paper. Another idea is to reuse and
recycle bottles and cans so that we can reduce garbage and save our natural resources.
Some other students have decided to go to school by bicycle to save energy and keep
the air clean. However, another group gave a better idea when they suggested taking
public buses for less exhaust fumes and less traffic jams. Our teacher agreed with all
the opinions, but he also added that things were easier said than done, and that we had
to do a lot to make our suggestions become reality.

True or False
1. Our class had an environment protection last week. F
2. Banana leaves can be used for wrapping food. T
3. Recycling bottles is a good way to reduce trash. T
4. The teacher was disappointed listening to us. F
Choose the best answer:
5. What do some students suggest using to wrap food?
A. paper B. banana leaves C. exhaust fume D. bottles
6. What can we avoid if we take public buses?
A. garbage B. traffic jams C. bottles D. perfumes
C. Today almost everyone walking down the street has at least one mobile phone in their
pockets. That is because many mobile phones are upgraded every year around the
world, and most people are interested in changing their old mobile phone for a new
one. There has been an estimated number of 90 million unwanted mobile phones in
the UK alone! This mountain weighs around 12,000 tons, but only about 5% of it is
recycled. What makes is worried most is that mobile phones contain harmful
chemicals which are released into the environment when phones begin to degrade
and, in addition large amounts of carbon dioxide are also produced during the
manufacture of phones. It seems that the more modern mobile phones become, the
worse our environment gets.

True or False
1. Mobile phones are modernized every year around the world. T
2. Most people are keen on having a newer mobile phone. T
3. About half of unwanted mobile phones in the UK are recycled. F
4. Old mobile phones do no harm to the environment. F
Choose the best answer:

A. The modernization of mobile phones is necessary.
B. There are more and more mobile phones in the world.
C. The modernization of mobile phones makes the environment worse.
D. The manufacture of phones produces carbon dioxide.
6. Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?
A. Modem mobile phones are worse for the environment than the older ones.
B. Mobile phones are getting cheaper and more modern.
C. People in the UK are very concerned to recycle old mobile phones.
D. Used mobile phones can pollute the environment.
D. We can develop alternative sources of energy and unless we try, we’ll never succeed.
Instead of burning fossil fuels we should be concentrating on more economical uses
of electricity, because electricity can be produced from any sources of energy. If we
didn’t waste so much energy our resources would last longer. We can save more
energy by conservation than we can produce for the same money. Unless we do
research on solar energy, wind power, tidal power, and hydroelectric plants, our fossil
fuels will run out and we’ll all freeze or starve to death. Several countries are
spending much more time and money on research because the energy from the sun,
the waves, and the winds last forever. We won’t really survive unless we start
working on cleaner and safer sources of energy.

True or False
1. Fossil fuels are renewable sources of energy. F
2. Electricity can be produced from the sea. F
3. The energy from the sun, the waves and the winds will never be used up. T
4. We really need to worry about cleaner and safer sources of energy. T
Choose the best answer:
5. What is the passage mainly about?
A. We are facing huge lack of energy.
B. Electricity is the main energy we use.
C. Alternative sources of energy must be developed.
D. It is impossible to have safer sources of energy.
6. Which source of energy cannot last forever?
A. coal B. wind C. water D. waves

E. Air pollution occurs when wastes dirty the air. People reduce most of the wastes that
cause air pollution. Such wastes can be in the form of gases or particles of solid or
liquid matter. The substances result chiefly from burning fuel to power motor vehicles
and to heat buildings. Industrial processes and the burning of garbage also contribute
to air pollution. Besides, there are other polluting substances that exist naturally in the
air. They include dust, pollen, soil particle, and naturally occurring gases.

The rapid growth of population and industry and the increasing use of automobiles
and airplanes have made air pollution a serious problem. The air we breathe has
become so filled with pollutants that it can cause health problems. It also harms
plants, animals, building materials and fabrics.

True or False
1. The wastes dirtying the air must always be in the form of solid or liquid matter. F
2. Agricultural and industrial processes also add pollution to the air. T
3. The increasing use of transportation is one of the causes of seriously polluted air.
T
4. The air pollution can only do harm to people’s health. F
Choose the best answer:
5. When does air pollution happen?
A. When wastes are in the form of gases B. When people produce wastes
C. When people reduce wastes D. When wastes dirty the air
6. What has made air pollution a serious problem?
A. The rapid growth of population B. The growth of industry
C. The increasing use of automobiles D. All are correct

made worse by the industrialized society we live in. (3) __________, we must remember
that there are certain species of plant and animal which, quite naturally, give off gases
that are very harmful to the atmosphere. And only 50 years ago in London, hundreds of
people died from the smog (4) __________ hung over the river Thames. What is
interesting here is that, yes, smoke and gases from industry, vehicles and fossil fuels were
ingredients in this deadly mixture. The other vital ingredients, though, was the
completely natural fog, and who would have thought that could be (5) __________? In
the early days of the industrial revolution, poets, painters and philosophers described how
the polluted urban skies made them think of the end of the nineteenth century, the
volcanic eruption of Krakatoa nearly made it happen! Thousands of tons of dust and ash
were thrown into the air and, for years afterwards, there were red sunsets caused by the
light filtering through this nature pollution. Remembering scientist’ pet theory about the

IV. READING COMPRENSION:

Reading comprehension 1
Almost all our energy comes from oil, coal, and natural gas. We call them fossil fuels.
The earth’s fossil fuels are running out. What will happen when there are no oil, coal,
and gas on earth? Scientists are trying to find and use other alternative source of
energy. We can use energy from the sun, the wind, and the water.

Solar energy is unlimited. The sun supplies all the energy used to grow plants, to
evaporate water for rain, and to maintain the temperature of the planet. All are
necessary for human life. If we are able to collect solar energy, we will be sure to
have this abundant source of power.

Another source of energy from nature is the wind. Wind power is clean and plentiful.
Energy the wind has been used for centuries to move ships, grind grain, pump water
and do other forms of work. In more recent times, wind has been used to generate
electricity.

Water can also provide power. For a long time, people have used water to power
machines. Some early uses of water power were to mill grain, saw wood, and power
machinery for the textile industry. Today water power is mostly used to generate
electricity.

Write True or False for the following statements.

1. There aren’t any alternative sources of energy which scientists are trying to F
find.
2. Energy from the sun is limited but energy from the wind is not. F
3. Our planet’s temperature can’t be maintained without solar power. T

Boy sees a typhoon
Scott is a 10-year-old pupil from America. At the beach on a trip to Japan with his
family, he looked up at the sky and saw two layers of dark clouds which were moving in
different directions. He was taught at school that the sign indicates the unstable
atmosphere. He told his mom the bad weather might be coming. A few minutes later, the
atmospheric pressure was getting lower and lower. Scott thought that there might soon be
a typhoon – a gigantic storm. Smartly, Scott persuaded people to evacuate to a safe place
to avoid the typhoon which followed 15 minutes later. Once it came, a huge wave
crashed on the seafront and caused massive destruction. Thanks to his quick thinking,
everyone survived the typhoon.

Floods are common natural disasters that can affect millions of people around the world.
They destroy houses and buildings and carry soil away from valuable farming land.
Floods can also contaminate drinking water and lead to diseases.

At least once a year the plains around large rivers are flooded. This is due to the amount
of water that rivers bring with them, because of heavy rainfall or melting snow in the
mountainous regions. Thunderstorms can cause flash floods, in which small rivers can
swell quickly and carry up to ten times the normal amount of water. Tropical storms,
cyclones and hurricanes also lead to flooding. Hurricane Katrina caused a massive
flooding of the whole Mississippi Delta in 2004.
