This Roadmap is intended to supplement your

Roadtrip experience. Just as the Roadtrip
isn’t a typical course, the Roadmap isn’t a
typical workbook. Each section reviews material
from each Mile Marker, but there are bonuses,
too — extra assignments and fun suggestions
for you to explore and go deeper if you wish.
That being said, the one area that DOES align
closely with the videos is the Tool for each
Mile Marker at the end. Those are highlighted
in this Roadmap with a specific Icon: “Rhythm
of the Road.” These are the exercises you are
walked through at the end of each Mile Marker.

1 a strategic plan that defines a goal or desired outcome and in-
cludes the major steps or milestones needed to reach it.

2 a communication tool that helps articulate strategic thinking —

the why — behind both the goal and the plan for getting there.

Like all maps, it includes sites of interest,

potential pitfalls, fueling opportunities,
and fun to be had.

And like all maps, it will provide little to

no value if you don’t actually open it up and
look at it. It’s meant to be used.

When I was young, we didn’t have GPS or iPhones. We

had actual paper roadmaps that we’d get from the
gas station and then store away until the next time
we needed ‘em. The glove box of my parent’s car was
packed with maps. Over time, they’d get soft with
use, tearing apart at the folds, and taped back
together.

The person in the front seat ridin’ shotgun was

assigned the serious task of navigation, keeping
track of the route and the upcoming turns, all laid
out in tiny print on a huge map. That glove box full
of maps to destinations near and far was a comfort,
an indication that however many miles we drove, we
could always find our way back home.

On this roadtrip, this is your roadmap, and I am

your navigator. I’m ridin’ shotgun, and I have laid
out the route in these pages for maximum exploration
and EXPERIENCE.

Yes, we will be entertained,

but more importantly, we will be transformed.

MILE MARKERS.
There are nine of ‘em, and they match up with the Mile
Markers in the Road Trip videos.
My suggestion: Approach ‘em in order because they build
on one another. Just like you can’t get to L.A. from
Texas without first passing through Arizona, you can’t
get to More Love without hitting More You first.

FUEL.
Tanks run low and you gotta refuel. When your tank is
running low, be smart. Pull over, fill ‘er up, stretch
your legs, and get going again. These pitstops won’t
take long, but they’re a critical part of the journey.

WATCH OUT.
If I toss one of these bad boys your way, no need to
flinch. It’s just my way of making sure you don’t miss
out on something important.

THE RHYTHM OF THE ROAD.

Know how when the wheels are hummin’ and the wind
is blowin’, you get hypnotized by the lane lines in
front of you? That’s the rhythm of the road, man. It
transports us to a new place where we are not limited
by time or space, where our minds are open and our
mouths are shut. This is where transformation occurs.
I’ll guide you through one of these Rhythms in each
Mile Marker. Go back and listen to ‘em again.

We’re all looking for more — in our relationships, careers, and personal life. On this
roadtrip, we’re gonna be traveling partners as we explore our past, our present, and our
future. We’re gonna figure out who we are, what we want, and how to get there.

Along the way, we’ll figure out how to navigate the highways and byways, dealing with the
red, yellow, and greenlights we encounter on our journey together. We’ll push each other to
dig deeper, have more fun, and explore the art of livin’.

Pain, loss, and crisis all can bring us to a screeching halt.

RED
The goal is: Avoid the ones we don’t need, and figure out how to

embrace the lessons and gifts inside the ones we do.

This is where most of life is lived, in between the red and

green. Yellow lights are all about CHOICES. The goal is: Know
LIGHT
when to floor it, and when to hit the breaks.

Green, as we know, means all systems GO. The goal is: Create and
GREENLIGHT
hit more greenlights, and make the most of them.

After my dad died, I had a dream that left me with this statement:
“Less impressed, more involved.” It forced me to look at where I was
“acting” in my life rather than living the role.

There are two types of greenlights: The ones we engineer by

the choices we make (like being kind to your future self),
and the ones I call “mystical,” because they’re gifts we
cannot expect, count on, or replicate. Both are valuable,
and both require appreciation and action.

YOUR TURN: Think back over the past three months. What greenlights did you engineer for
yourself? Which ones were gifts from God/the Universe?

ENGINEERED: MYSTICAL:

e.g. “Signed up for personal training e.g. “Former roommate reached out

When it comes to yellow lights, some should be ignored and some should be
embraced. Denying actual warning signs, though, can be like putting a piece
of duct tape over the “low fuel” light in your car and driving yourself dry.
The secret is knowing when a “check engine” notification is legit, and when
it’s trying to tell you a bruise is a broken arm.

YOUR TURN: What are some warning signs you’ve denied in the past, when you should
have slowed down to take inventory?

e.g. “I ignore any discomfort in my body and keep pushing through, which more often
than not leads to sickness or burnout, and costs me days to recover.”

YOUR TURN: When have you given in to a yellow light when you should have floored it?

e.g. “I got a negative performance review in my first job. Instead of doubling down
and addressing my areas of improvement, I quit. I still kick myself for not sticking
it out.”

YOUR TURN: Do you have a pile of shit you keep steppin’ in over and over? What is
it — and how are you going to avoid it in the future?

e.g. “I keep hooking up with people who tell me upfront they aren’t looking for any-
thing serious — and then get blindsided when they dump me a few months later. In the
future, I need to believe what they tell me the first time.”

Here’s where the rubber meets the road. We gotta clear the decks and get

Dump out everything in your pocket, purse, backpack, or satchel and make a list here:

Admitting comes with risk. And it’s

If you’ve ever been frisked, you know that it can

we don’t wanna be gentle. Let’s get in there and
shake out the lies we’ve been telling ourselves,
the ones we’re telling others, and the ones we’ve
been believing for too long.

YOUR TURN: What lies have other people told us - that we may have thought weren’t
true - but chose to believe them anyway?

e.g. “My spouse told me I don’t have what it takes to go out and start my own busi-

YOUR TURN: When did you know something was a lie but you chose to believe it because
it was more convenient to do so?

Pretty much everyone wants more CHOICE. It sounds like freedom, right? While responsibility
feels heavy, like duty and obligation. One thing we need to remember is that NOT CHOOSING
— procrastination — is also a choice. So we need to get curious about how to make better
choices.

looking for the quick flip. Owners are looking to invest in a long-term asset.

Consequences are the outcomes of our choices. You can
engineer better outcomes by putting rails on your

e.g. “I want a new job, but I can save a few months’ worth of expenses before I give

Ask yourself if you want to, before you do. Just because it’s available doesn’t mean you
need to say “Yes.” Cutting out options can help you get where you want to go.

YOUR TURN: Think about an upcoming decision, big or small. What options can you cut?

MORE LOVE

lav| noun
unselfish loyal and be-
nevolent concern for the
good of another

When most people think about “love,” they typically have a one-dimensional view of what it
is. Open up your beliefs about what love must be, and you will experience more love in your
life.

Self-love and selfless love. Both are necessary, because we can only value someone else
when we value ourselves. Both start with respect, honesty, and trust. Selfless love is
rooted in service. Acts of service for someone else can mean as much to the giver as the
receiver — if you give with no expectation of compensation.

What is love?
Write a love poem to an inanimate object:

Selfless love is a one-way ticket that’s not

reliant on the receiver’s reciprocity.

YOUR TURN: Where have you been giving with strings attached, expecting something in re-
turn? Where have you been keeping score?

e.g. “I help my colleague with a work project, but get grumpy and resentful when
they don’t publicly acknowledge my contributions.”

Think about the person you wish THEY would be. Describe that person here … and then
strive to live up to that list for just 24 hours.

e.g. “I wish my spouse put me first, asked me for my opinion, listened without
looking at the TV or the phone. I wish they kissed me hello and goodbye and sent me
loving texts during the day. I wish they made me feel like the most important person
in the world.”

Tend your relationships. Pull the weeds. Water

the flowers. Give ‘em some sun. And even accept
the fact that some of those flowers may bloom
into something you did not expect.

MORE SELFISH

selfiSH | noun
concerned chiefly with
one’s own personal profit
or pleasure

Selfishness has been given a bad rap. True selfishness is about pursuing your own good AND
that of your neighbor.

The more we focus on developing ourselves, the more we are able to give others.

The more selfISH we are, the more selfLESS we can be.

The more selfLESS we are, the more we can serve ourselves — and others.
Serving others is actually selfISH. We feel good when we make others feel good.
We give because giving to others gives to US.

YOUR TURN: Think about three of the last “selfLESS” good deeds you’ve done. How did they
ultimately benefit YOU, by way of benefiting others?

e.g. “I volunteer at the animal shelter every month. I feel good about myself when I
help the animals.”

Why did you do it?

Gotta feed the family or you’ll lose the farm.

Being chiefly concerned
with YOURSELF does not
prevent you from serving
others.

YOUR TURN: What are some selfish things that are best for YOU … knowing that directly
OR indirectly, they will benefit others as well?

YOUR TURN: This is your final roadmap. It’s time to serve yourself.

ADMIT one way in your life that you’re trying to be more like someone else than
YOURSELF and commit to stopping it.

Admit something you care about and VALUE in your life that you’re not tending to as
well as you could, and commit to start giving it the attention it deserves.

Admit a CHOICE you haven’t yet made and commit to making it.

Admit a habit you have that keeps throwing you off BALANCE, and commit to the actions
that will rebalance you.

Admit one mundane act that you don’t enjoy but you used to, and commit to ENJOYING it
again.

Admit one way you’ve been a dork in the past, and instead commit to being COOL.

Admit where you’ve been keeping an unfair scorecard with your LOVE, and commit to
letting it go.

Congratulations, you’re SELFISH.

Remember, these are RHYTHMS, meaning things that

not done! Just like meditation, prayer, exercise,
