DLP - Science 5 CloseOpen

The document provides a detailed lesson plan for a science class on open and closed electric circuits. The lesson plan outlines objectives, subject matter, materials, and procedures for an activity where students will construct open and closed circuits using batteries, bulbs, wires and switches. Students will work in groups to set up circuits and observe whether bulbs light up in open or closed configurations. Through discussion, they will learn the difference between open and closed circuits.

Prayer Let’s do our morning prayer. Students will do the prayer.

Greetings Okay, once again good morning class. All: Good morning, Ma’am

How are you all today? All: We are doing good, Ma’am

Okay, class, what should we observe during our

class?
All: Be safe! Wear mask.
All: Sit properly.
All: Listen attentively

All: Raise your hand
Ok, very good children. Don’t forget our
classroom rules. Now can you give me rules no.

listen)
Recall/Review Now, kids, let us recall what we learned last
time. What did you learn from the previous
topic?
Student: Yesterday, we learned
the parts of a simple circuit,
namely the battery, bulb,

Student: We turn the light on.

Student: We turn the switch on.

Student: When we press the

switch “on”, the bulb lights up
because of the electricity.
(The teacher will ask the following questions)
1. How many appliances and gadgets do
you have?
2. How does electricity flow to your
appliances and gadgets?
3. How important is electricity in your
lives.

Excellent!
D. Lesson
Proper

Activity Today, kids, we are going to make an experiment

to distinguish between a closed circuit and an
open circuit.
But before that, let me remind you of the three (Children are sitting quietly)
things that must be observed during the
experiment.

1. Focus (be observant)

2. Cooperate
3. Teamwork

I will divide you into 5 groups.

Materials: You will need:

1. one 1.5V AA battery (source)
2. small bulb
3. three 20 cm copper wire (connecting
wires)

Time Frame: 10 mins

(The teacher will distribute to each group the
same materials that they used in the previous
experiment).

Okay, class, you may begin. (The students will gather together
with their group mates and start
What to do: the experiment.

1. Construct a simple electric circuit.

2. Connect the materials as shown in
the diagram below. Observe what
happens.
3. Next, remove the switch connection.
Again, observe what happens.
Setup A. Closed Circuit

Students: Yes

In this setup, a wire is attached to the negative

end of the battery, while the other wire is
attached to the positive end. Both wires are
attached to the bulb. Such a circuit is called a
closed circuit.
Did the bulb light up? __________

A closed circuit makes the bulb light up because

the part of electricity is complete, allowing
electricity to flow through t. Electriciy flows from
the negative to the positive terminal of the dry
cell.

Seup B: Open Circuit

Students: No

In this setup, the switch is off. The wires are not

attached to each other.

Electricity does not flow in in this circuit because

there is a gap or no complete path from one end
of the circuit to the other end.
Did the bulb light up? __________
Students: Yes
Analysis Let’s study the result of your experiment.

In your setup, the switch and the wires connect

the light bulb to the battery.

Let’s study the result of your experiment.

All the groups, kindly show us the result.

The groups will present their

results.

SETUP Circuit Did the

type bulb
light
up?
A
Did all 5 groups get the same result? B

Now kids, listen and answer the following

questions. Students: Yes

In setup A, why didn’t the bulb light up?

1. What happened to the bulb after you connect Student: Because both wires are
the switch to the wire? Why? connected to the metal casing.
2. What happened to the bulb after you detach
the switch to the wire? Why?
Student: The current is unable to
Okay, very good answer. flow.
Now, what happens when both wires are
connected to the metal casing of the bulb?
Very well said.

Student: There is no flow of

current because both wires are
In set-up B, why didn’t the bulb light up? What connected to the metal tip.
happened?

Excellent answer!

Student: There is a flow of current

because one wire is connected to
In set-up C, why did the bulb light up? the metal casing & one wire is
connected to the metal tip.

Excellent answer! Student: I felt excited and happy.

Student: I was very curious about
Now, what did you feel during the experiment? what will happen.
How was the experience?

Very good kids!

because
there is a gap or no complete path from
one end of the circuit to the other end. If
it is an open circuit, an electrical device
does not work. In the case of Figure 3
below, the bulb does not light up.

Student: Because both wires are

connected to the metal casing of
the bulb.

Student: No, because there is a

Closed Circuit (Switch On) - A closed gap in the circuit that prevents the
circuit makes the bulb light up because bulb from lighting up.
the
path of electricity is complete. Electric
current flows through the connecting
wires
from the power source to the device (ex.
bulb) then back to the source again.
Student: The current from the
battery is unable to flow through
the filament because there is a gap
in the circuit.

Student: Because there is no gap

on the circuit with the bulb.
Current will be able to flow from
the battery through the filament,
causing the bulb to light up.
All: Yes, Ma’am
All: No, Ma’am

(Students will answer one by one

on the board)

Generalization Okay, class, what we have learned today? (Children are raising their hands
and answering one by one)

We learned that, for the bulb to

light in the circuit, the parts of the
circuits should be properly
connected.
Excellent!

What shall you do to light a bulb up?

Student: Connect one wire to the

metal casing, and one wire to the
metal tip and properly connect it
Very well said! to the battery.

For the bulb to light up you must:

1. Connect one wire to the metal casing
2. Connect one wire to the metal tip

What else should we consider especially the

connections to the battery? Another thing that we should
consider is the proper connection
of wires in the dry cell (battery).
Very good children!
Dry cells only work if there is a complete path
where current can flow. So, if there is a gap in
the circuit, the current will not flow.

Application 1. What is the role of switch in (The children will raise their
the appliances? hands).
2. What do you do when you are
Student: I will turn on the light.
not using the appliances at Student: I will press the switch on.
home?
3. Is it important to unplug the
appliances from the sucket.

Evaluation Students will answer in their

notebooks.
Students will answer on the board.
V. Assignment Make a short reflection of what you have
learned today.
Complete the statement.
