Matching Activity: Equations, Graphs, and Tables: Algebra Common Core Standard

This activity provides students with practice matching equations, graphs, and tables that represent different functions. Students work in pairs to match equations to graphs, then are given tables to match. The teacher monitors and checks student work. The activity is designed to help students see the relationship between different representations of functions.

Matching Activity: Equations, Graphs, and Tables Mrs Math

How to use this activity

 Materials – scissors, worksheets, (glue and construction paper optional)
 Put students in pairs and hand them just the graphs and equations (pgs 2 & 3).
Have them raise their hands when they finish so you can check their work.
(Give them the glue is they get it correct if you are having them use glue and
construction paper.)
 Students who have completed the first part of the activity should be handed the
tables (pg 4) and the slips of paper to record their answers (pg. 5).
 CAUTION: Giving students all 18 graphs, tables, and equations at one time
will just overwhelm them. Plus breaking the activity into two parts is great for
differentiation. Some students will only be able to get the equation and graphs
matching section.

Algebra Common Core Standard:

Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of the context.

For a function that models a relationship between two quantities, interpret key features of graphs and
tables in terms of the quantities, and sketch graphs showing key features given a verbal description of
the relationship. Key features include: intercepts; intervals where the function is increasing,
decreasing, positive, or negative; relative maximums and minimums; symmetries; end behavior; and
periodicity.

This activity will help students see the relationship between verbal equations, tables,
and graphs. Do not assume students know how to go between these different
functional representations on their own. It needs to be demonstrated and practiced.
