CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Sleep is very essential in our lives; It allows us to regain more energy and process

our minds better. According to Gulia & Kumar (2020), Good sleep is important for the

health and well- being of people of all ages; however, given the current diff i cult

circumstances, sleep, which accounts for nearly one-third of our lives, should be

prioritized in order to achieve better immunity. It has a lot of great benefits for our

bodies. Not only does it put everyone in a positive mood, but this also prevents us

from gaining weight. Furthermore, it has a great impact on our emotions and

intelligence. Sleeping is just as important as eating, drinking, and bathing. It's like a

basic necessity in our lives. We must do it efficiently day after day. According to

(Shrof f 2020), Teens 12 to 18 years old should sleep 8 to 9 hours per day. But

unfortunately, many of them seem to have a hard time meeting this standard. The

author also states that it turns out that many teenagers actually may need more

sleep than in previous years. However, for many teenagers, social pressures

conspire against getting the proper amount and quality of sleep. (Johnson 2020),

summarizes that the ideal time to sleep and wake up will differ depending on the

individual. In specific, people should try to sleep a few hours after dark and start

waking up within the first few hours of daylight. (Cherney 2019) states that the better

the quality of sleep you get, the less likely you are to experience significant daytime

sleepiness. According to (Carskadon et al., 2006 as cited by Dimitriou et al., 2015)

habitual weeknight sleep loss gets worse as individuals advance through their

teenage years. As students get closer to being adults, the greater the task will be.

And since they're overloaded with schoolwork, finding time to fall asleep becomes
more and more difficult. Sleep deprivation or a lack of sleep makes a person

susceptible to illness and other implications. Aside from that, students who didn't get

enough sleep will feel tired, drowsy, and sleep during class hours. It may also cause

students to have difficulties with comprehension and retention during their classes.

According to (Lee et al., 2015), The learning capacity and academic performance of

adolescents may be affected by sleep quality or quantity because sleep plays

important role in attention and memory. As lack of sleep affects our lives, learning

becomes challenging, and we become forgetful. Furthermore, thousands of students

around the globe are at risk of sleep deprivation which contributes to lower academic

outcomes and problems at the workplace (Merenheimo 2018). Nowadays, in this

face to face , private schools teach students, Not only they spent long hours of

learning; they also often have school tasks, homework, and even projects. In

conclusion, they are most likely to be exposed to the use of technology and

electronic devices that may contribute to sleep deprivation. They spend long hours

struggling to pass the papers on time, especially if the deadline is tomorrow, which

may shorten their duration of sleep. However, we cannot say that all students are

negatively affected by sleep deprivation.

In today’s society, sleep deprivation is widespread issue that affects many people at

some point in their lives that could experience emotional difficulties when someone

gets less sleep than necessary to stay awake or alert. In order for human beings to

function properly, sufficient sleep each night is vital. Sleep deprivation occurs when

an adequate amount of sleep is not being maintained. As Graduating students,

countless sleepless nights have been experienced due to work schedules, required

coursework. It has been found that “up to 60% of all Graduating Grade 12 students

suffer from a poor sleep quality” (Schlarb et al., 2017, p. 1). Overtime, a lack of sleep
can negatively affect a person’s physiological health, psychological health, and

cognitive function. Therefore, it is important to investigate how sleep impacts the

human body and look into ways to combat the issue of sleep deprivation. Sleep

deprivation is common amongst students whom live in a culture that promotes

reduced sleep, due to the burden of academic work and social pursuits. The reasons

for poor sleep hygiene include alcohol and caffeine intake, stimulants, and

technology, which prevent students achieving sufficient sleep time and quality.

However, current literature has a narrow focus in regard to domains tested, this

study aimed to investigate the effects of sleep deprivation on Grade 12 graduating

students. Dewald and colleagues emphasized that because of the diversity of the

methodology of studies, it is impossible to definitely derive a relationship between

sleep quality and academic performance, and thus more longitudinal intervention

studies are warranted.

1.1 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY

The aim of this study is to provide answers about the effects of sleep

deprivation to the students, especially to all grade 12 students in Saint Joseph

Institute of Technology who commonly encounters it.

This study is not just aiming to create answers but to conduct possible

solutions that would help in promoting changes about the different instances that the

student have in facing sleep deprivation. With the aid of this study it helps the

researchers seek the possible reason and how the students overcome about the

problem.
1.2 RESEARCH QUESTIONS

of Senor High School Students of Saint Joseph Institute of Technology.

Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions.

2.What are the possible reasons of student’s why they were lacking of sleep rest

or why they were sleep deprived?

Students. In this study, students become more knowledgeable enough about how

they are affected by sleep deprivation in terms of academic performance. And they

can be aware of what are the consequences of that case.

Teachers. The study could help the teachers to understand the effects of sleep

deprivation in the academic performance of their students and may serve as an eye

opener on how they will handle them. Hence, they can give extra activities at school

instead of giving them activities at home so that students can have plenty of rest.
