Discussion Assignment 1 (Biol 1301)

Inductive reasoning draws broad inferences from facts and is used in descriptive biology to develop explanations and predictions from evidence. Deductive reasoning evaluates existing concepts through experimentation to anticipate results. While inductive reasoning establishes observably true conclusions, deductive reasoning allows testing of hypotheses. Overall, inductive reasoning is generally best for establishing cause-and-effect relationships through biological investigation given its reliance on empirical evidence and observations.

In your assigned readings, you learned how inductive and deductive reasoning are used to

answer questions about life. Briefly compare and contrast each type of reasoning as they

apply to biological investigation. Which, if any, type of reasoning is best used to establish

cause and effect relationships? Explain your rationale using one or more examples.

- The research process in science is creating a theory, validating it by means of

investigations, assessments, and examinations, and providing rational justification.

Deductive Reasoning and Inductive Reasoning are the two categories that comprise study

methodologies.

Inductive reasoning is a method of thinking that draws broad inferences from a set

of related facts; this approach is frequently used in descriptive science. On the other hand,

deductive thinking is the method of introspective thought used to evaluate concepts and

speculations that already exist (generic ideas) by combining results from experiments

(particular examples) that put these thoughts to the test (Openstax, 2013). Scientists

employ both types of analysis or argument to support or refute a notion. Both have

similarities in this regard since they both involve scientific techniques designed to draw a

particular conclusion from the outcomes of many experiments. Deductive reasoning is

considered absolutely true and inductive reasoning is considered observably true

(Openstax, 2013). The method used by the scientist or those doing the research to reach

the conclusions, nevertheless, differs significantly.

If we apply biological investigation-

1. Since it is based on information, evidence, and visual inspection, inductive reasoning

is generally the ideal approach to conducting biological investigations.

2. The approach used in science allows for the use of inductive reasoning. It is used by

researchers to develop explanations and predictions. They are able to implement the

hypotheses to particular circumstances thanks to deductive reasoning.

3. In the majority of Biology research facilities, participants will be tasked with

completing projects throughout lab time. The process of experimentation is the way

that science is developed.

4. The scientific approach employs reasoning to examine propositions and concepts. "In

deductive inference, we hold a theory and on the basis of it, we make a prediction of

its consequences," says David Bohm. Thus, we anticipate where the result will be.

5. The goal enables forecasting the behavior of the environment as a whole. Through the

use of information from both the previous and current inferences, scientists seek to

forecast and maybe influence events to come. The following process can be used to

make reliable estimates: begin by collecting assessments, then use inductive

reasoning to develop an estimation, then carry out a test, conduct analysis, generate

an interpretation, and finally publish the outcome of the experiment (Openstax, 2013).
