Syllabus for Term - 1 2021-22
Determinant of a square matrix (up to 3 × 3
matrices), minors, cofactors and
applications of determinants in finding the
area of a triangle. Adjoint and inverse of a
square matrix. Solving system of linear
equations in two or three variables (having
unique solution) using inverse of a matrix.
Introduction/Value of
Determinant
1. To every square matrix we can
associate a number (real or complex)
or a function known as determinant
of the square matrix.
2. We read |A| as determinant A and not
as absolute value (modulus) of A.
3. A determinant corresponding to
matrix
Introduction/Value of
Determinant
4. A determinant corresponding to matrix

of order 3 × 3 or of order

3 is given by

= a11(a22a33 - a32a23) - a12(a21a33 - a31a23) +

a13(a21a32 - a31a22).
Introduction/Value of
Determinant
This determinant can be expanded using
any row or column (generally we expand
along that row or column which contains
maximum number of zeros, if exists,
otherwise we generally expand using first
row/column).

Note: While expanding we attach the

following +, -

signs:
Area of a triangle using
Determinants
1. Area of a triangle with vertices (x1,
y1), (x2, y2) and (x3, y3) is given by

1. If points (x1, y1), (x2, y2) and (x3, y3)

are collinear, then

Area of a triangle using
Determinants
Note:
1. If value of Δ is negative, we take the
absolute value to find area and write
answer as positive quantity.
2. If area is given and we have to find
some condition, then we use both
positive and negative values of the
determinant for calculation.
Minors and Cofactors

Minor of an element of a Cofactor of an element of

determinant: Minor of an element aij, a determinant: Cofactor
of a determinant is the determinant of an element aij of a
obtained by deleting its ith row and jth determinant, denoted by
column of the given determinant in Aij, is given by Aij = (-
which element aij lies. Minor of an 1)i+jMij, where Mij is
element aij is denoted by Mij. minor of an element aij.
Adjoint/Inverse of a Matrix

Adjoint of matrix: Adjoint of a square

matrix A is transpose of a matrix obtained
by cofactors of each element of a
determinant corresponding to a given
matrix.
Adjoint of matrix A is denoted by adj A.

Note:
(i) If A is a square matrix, then A.(adj A) =
(adj A).A = |A|I.
(ii) If A is a square matrix of order n, then
(a) |(adj A)| = |A|n-1
(b) |A(adj A)| = |A|n.
Adjoint/Inverse of a Matrix

A square matrix whose inverse exists, is (a) If A is a given matrix,

called invertible matrix. Inverse of only a then AA-1 = A-1A = I.
non-singular matrix exists. Inverse of (b) If A and B are
matrix A is denoted by A-1 , given by invertible matrices of
the same order, then
(AB)-1 = B-1A-1.
Note: If a determinant corresponding to a (c) For a square matrix A
square matrix A is zero, then matrix is said to (i) (A-1)-1 = A
be singular matrix. If |A| ≠ 0, then it is said to (ii) (A’)-1 = (A-1)’
be a non-singular matrix.
Solution of System of linear
equations using inverse of a
matrix

Let the given system be a1x + b1y + c1z = d1;

a2x + b2y + c2z = d2; a3x + b3y + c3z = d3.
Solution of System of linear
equations using inverse of a
matrix

AX = B is matrix equation. Its solution is X

= A-1B.
(i) If |A| ≠ 0, system is consistent and has
a unique solution.
(ii) If |A| = 0 and (adj A).B ≠ 0, then system
of equations is inconsistent and has no
solution.
(iii) If |A| = 0 and (adj A).B = 0, then
system of equations is dependent and has
infinite solutions.
