Reflection Questions pertaining to the movie “Good Will Hunting” -20 points.

1. What are the key therapeutic events? Psychotherapy is used throughout the movie to build
trust, allowing the client to lead when he is ready (very humanistic). 1pt

2. Which is the most important therapeutic event? The collaborative, some transference, rich
communicative, combined therapeutic concepts helped Will overcome his maladaptive thoughts
and behaviors. 1pt

3. Describe how the therapeutic relationship is established. The relationship was built in a
culturally sensitive and welcoming environment. The therapist used a combined therapy
approach to build trust, including talk therapy, open communication, empathy, honesty, and good
listening. 1pt

4. Note the first session and the discussion at the lake particularly. What are the key
aspects of each of these events? How do these encounters affect the counseling relationship
as it develops? 3pts. The therapist is creative and decided to change the setting to enhance their
therapeutic relationship. The environment, body language, and verbal cues will impact the
therapeutic relationship. The setting showed Will they were in a partnership and equally invested
in his well-being. They made a breakthrough in that sense because they seemed to have a sense
of understanding of their roles and trust established.

5. Identify the therapeutic goals of the following entities: legal system, math professor,
therapist, and client. 2pts The legal system was concerned with Will’s several negatives and
was prepared to keep him incarcerated. The math professor was more concerned with Will’s
future and wanted to expedite his career without concern for his maladaptive behaviors and
mental well-being. The therapist wanted to focus on giving Will time to discover his potential by
empowering him to choose his path. Additionally, the therapist recognized that before Will could
perform to his true potential, he had to address the root of the negative behaviors.
6. Is the counselor’s use of disclosure appropriate? How does it fit with your theoretical
view? 1pt Disclosure is sometimes necessary and appropriate within reason. The disclosure was
helpful to the therapeutic relationship because it made the therapist relatable and essential to
build trust.

7. What is the effect of the non-therapeutic touch in the first session? What is the effect of
the hug at the end of the relationship? 3pts. The therapist overstepped boundaries, and it was
inappropriate for him to choke Will. However, the encounter taught Will to respect the
boundaries of his wife. The last hug solidified their mutually beneficial and positive therapeutic
relationship.

8. What is the effect of the therapist’s repetition of “It’s not your fault”? What is the
value/function of the repetition? 3pts. The first hug helped Will to recognize that he is in
control, his past does not define him, and that he deserves to be loved and has potential. The
reputation was to ensure Will believed it and recognized he was wronged.

9. Do the concepts of “social responsibility” and Will’s personal rights conflict? As a

therapist, how does this fit with your view of self-fulfillment? 3pts Will’s potential was
evident to his friends and the adults in the movie. However, will did not recognize his potential
because of his past trauma and unresolved maladaptive behaviors. Will needed to realize his
potential and understand how he could positively develop and contribute to his well-being and
society. Therapy helped Will to recognize his worth and challenged him to seek his ambitions.

10. Should the therapist have continued to work with the client after the first session, given
the therapist’s unresolved personal loss issues? 2pts Yes, and he did. The therapist recognized
he was projecting on Will and felt he owed the therapeutic relationship a chance. In the end, the
therapeutic relationship was successful, and the mission was accomplished. Will appeared to be
on a healthy path to recovery and overcoming the maladaptive behaviors. Moreover, the therapist
benefitted from the relationship and, in the end, took steps to address his grief. Several ethical
issues were evident but understood for the movie.
