guess in his/her forehead. With that, the class will describe the word but not coach
the exact word.
Ask the students about the following questions:
4.3 Analysis
1. What is right triangle?
2. Who is Pythagoras?
3. What is the formula of Pythagorean Theorem?
4. What is Pythagorean Theorem?
4.4 Abstraction What Is the Pythagorean Theorem?

20 minutes A right triangle consists of two sides called the legs and one side called
the hypotenuse. The hypotenuse is the longest side and is opposite the right angle.

The Pythagorean Theorem or Pythagoras' Theorem is a formula relating the lengths

of the three sides of a right triangle.

If we take the length of the hypotenuse to be c and the length of the legs to
be a and b then this theorem tells us that:

c2 = a2 + b2

Pythagorean Theorem states that

In any right triangle, the sum of the squared lengths of the two legs is equal to the
squared length of the hypotenuse.

Note: Pythagorean theorem only works for right triangles.

Who was Pythagoras?

Pythagoras' theorem takes its name from the ancient Greek

mathematician and philosopher, Pythagoras of Samos (c 569 - 495 BC).
Although little reliable evidence about Pythagoras' life remains, there are
many mathematical and scientific discoveries attributed to him and his
school of followers and pupils, the most famous of which being the
theorem which bears his name.

Solve the word problems. Round the answer to the nearest tenth.

1.) A 15- foot tree casts a shadow that is 8 feet long. What is the distance from the
tip of the tree to the tip of its shadow?

Solution:
a2 + b2 =c2
82 + 152 = c2
64 + 225 = c2
289 = c2
√289 = √𝑐2
17 = c

Therefore, the distance from the tip of the tree to

the tip of its shadow is 17 feet.

2.) Joshua won a laptop in a school raffle. The laptop screen measures 10 inches in
height and 24 inches in width. Find the diagonal length of the laptop screen.
Solution:
a2 + b2 =c2
102 + 242 = c2
100 + 576 = c2
676 = c2
√676 = √𝑐2
26 = c
Therefore, the diagonal length of the laptop
screen is 26 inches.

3.) If the foot of a 10-meter ladder is placed 6 meters from a building, how high up
the building will the ladder reach?

Solution:
a2 + b2 =c2
62 + b2 = 102
36 + b2 = 100
b2 = 100-36
√b2 = √64
b=8
Therefore, the the ladder reach 8 meters.

4.5 Application APPLICATION

10 minutes Directions: Solve the given problems using Pythagorean Theorem.

1. The length and width of a rectangle are 8cm and 6cm, respectively. Find the
length of the diagonal of the rectangle.

6 cm

8 cm
2. If the 10-meter artificial tree that will be used in a theatre is placed 6 meters from
the backstage, how high up the backstage will the artificial tree reach?

3. The size of a TV screen is given by the length of its diagonal. If the dimension of
a TV screen is 16 inches by 14 inches, what size of the TV screen?

Expected answers:

1. Solution:
62 + 82 =c2
36 + 64 = c2
100 = c2
√100 = √𝑐2
10 = c
2. Solution:
a2 + b2 =c2
62 + b2 = 102
36 + b2 = 100
b2 = 100-36
√b2 = √64
b=8

3. a2 + b2 =c2
142 + 162 = c2
196 + 256 = c2
452 = c2
√452 = √𝑐2
21.26 = c

4.6 Assessment
10 minutes Tests 1. A 10 ft. bamboo ladder is placed against the wall
with its base 3ft. from the wall. Find the height
from the top of the bamboo ladder to the ground.

a² +b² = c²
a² +3²= 10²
a² + 9 = 100
a² = 100-9
a² = 91
a= √ 91

2. The diagonal of a rectangle measures 26cm and

one of its side measures 24cm, Find the length of
the other side.

a²+b²= c²
a² + 24²= 26²
a² + 576= 676
a² = 676-576
a²= 100
a= √100
a= 10

building and is positioned such that the base of the
lesson
ladder is 21 feet from the base of the building. How
far above the ground is the point where the ladder
touches the building?

a² +b² = c²
a² + 21² = 35²
a² + 441 = 1225
a²= 1225- 441
a²= 784
a= √784
