Assignment: Final Technical Report Due Date: Class 12(see “Drafting Deadlines”)

Introduction: The Final Technical Report is a requirement of the CCDP2100 term


project for Section I. The purpose of the Final Technical Report is to have students
explain an aspect of a topic concerned with vehicle design using their Proposal
Research Table question(s) as a guide.

Final Technical Report Content Requirements: Final Technical Reports should


include the following:

 Title Page: report title, date, by whom, to whom


 Informative Abstract
 Table of Contents
 List of Figures and/or List of Tables
 Introduction including
o the reason for the report
o the purpose of the report mentioning the research question(s)
o a preview (outline) of the report’s contents
 Background contextualizing the discussion
 Discussion of research findings including
o answer(s) to the research question(s)
o figures/tables/equations
o explanation of figures/tables/equations
o explanation of technical concept(s)
o definitions of key term(s)
o full names for abbreviation(s) (acronyms and initialisms)
 Conclusion including
o restatement of the purpose of the report
o summary of the key points of the report
 4 sources documented in IEEE style (in-text citations and list of references)
o 2 sources should be non-website sources
o in-text citations must be used for borrowed equations, facts, ideas,
information, graphics, tables
 Appendix or appendices (for copied sources): cross-referenced in the report

Drafting Deadlines: the 1st draft should be ready to be reviewed at the beginning of
Class 9; the 2nd draft should be ready to be reviewed at the beginning of Class 10; the
final version should submitted at the beginning of Class 12.

Final Technical Report Format and Submission Requirements: Please pay careful
attention to the following requirements:

Format requirements.

o Final Technical Reports should be


 a maximum of 1000 words of typewritten text (for the
introduction, background, discussion, and conclusion)
 typed in a 12-point font
 double-spaced
 paginated according to traditional report conventions

o Final Technical Reports should include


 sources in IEEE documenting style
 in-text citations
 list of references
 section and subsection headings
 informatively titled
 properly numbered
 figures/tables/equations
 properly numbered
 properly captioned/titled/named
 properly labelled (parts/columns)/defined (variables)
 integrated into the written text

Submission requirements.

o Final Technical Reports should be submitted under cover of a letter of


transmittal (not included in 1000-word limit).

o The letter of transmittal should be double-spaced (excepting address


information) and typed in a 12-point font. It should be in proper letter
format (sender and recipient departmental addresses and date), and it
should include

 a salutation
 an introductory message mentioning the report by title
 a main paragraph briefly stating the report’s
o research topic
o research question(s)
o significance
 a closing message signalling thanks and including only your
Carleton email address as contact information
 a valediction

Final technical report package submission requirements. Final Technical


Reports should be submitted as Final Technical Report packages in a folder
labelled with your name and contact information, course code and section, and
project topic. Final Technical Report packages should include

o two rough drafts of the Final Technical Report with feedback


 The first rough draft includes research question(s), background,
and discussion sections
 The second rough draft includes full report content requirements
including letter of transmittal
o one final draft of the Final Technical Report
 covered by a letter of transmittal
o hard copies of all the portions of the sources (printed and electronic)
referred to in the Final Technical Report with
 each source portion labelled with full bibliographic information

Please clearly label each draft document with a footer including your name,
the date, the document title, draft number, and pagination.

Note: Final Technical Report packages should also be submitted in soft copy to
the cuLearn assignment drop-box.

Evaluation: This assignment is worth 30% of your grade. It is to be individually


written, and a grade will be awarded to the individual writer. The assignment will be
evaluated on the basis of audience awareness, content, format, language use, and
organisation. (See the course outline for details concerning each element under
evaluation.)
