REFLECTIVE ESSAY
Subject: Product Management

INTRODUCTION
I have finished a 3-week course of Product Management and submitted the group project
for the new product. Now it is time for me to look back and see how myself has been
improved through this semester. Although it was the course with online meetings, I had a
variable experience and opportunities to enhance not only my research skills, writing
skills and my interpersonal skills through my group project – GROUP 11 with
“incrEDIBLE spoons” product.
This paper is aimed to focus on both the process of learning as well as the technical and
marketing aspects of the course. The learning experiences will discuss both positive and
negative challenges that I encountered throughout this Product Management course. The
first part will highlight my self-reflection on learning experiences and the second part is
about my work in the teamwork including my role in the group project, the barriers that I
have faced and how I dealt with those problems.
SELF-REFLECTION ON THE LEARNING EXPERIENCE:
Expectations
After the first meeting, Dr. Nicholas has asked the class to turn in the expectations
learning this course. At that time, oriented myself to be the comprehensive marketing
manager in the future, I comprehend that product management plays such an essential
factor for me to achieve my goal. However, before undertaking this course, PM was an
unfamiliar term to me as I had no idea about this. What I expected to learn was how can
an idea of a new product can generate and the process of launching it to the market as
well. Hence, this course provides me a great chance of getting familiarized product
principles.
Process of learning
Throughout the course, I had a chance to research and acquire a huge amount of the
knowledge through Dr. Nicholas and the materials provided by the course. From my
point of view, the foundation is quite familiar with the subject I have learned before –
Principles of Marketing such as analyzing the PEST environment and the SWOT model
but it more focuses on overall vision and strategies. Dr. Nicholas has provided many case
studies apply the theories in practice that I found really helpful and make the lessons are
much more intelligibility. Moreover, it is appealing that I could study the usage of
Business Analysis to evaluate the business attractiveness of the proposed new products
and distinguish between the three major components of market offering – product, price
and service.
In addition, at the same time with learning this course, we had a campaign of launching a
new product which means that what we had learned can apply in practice immediately. I
found it is more practical and this is the efficient way to gain a new knowledge as people
generally remember 90% of what they do. What I found interesting is that beside learning
from Dr. Nicholas, I can also learn from the other students through On the Balcony with
36 different topics of different products and know more and more the case study and
marketing strategies which is essential for my work in the future.
In my opinion, this course is challenging for me as it was the first subject learning by
English in university and with the different learning method – online meeting. Therefore,
at first, I felt overwhelmed and not compromise with this but as the time passes, I adapted
to this new learning method. Although learning dace-to-face learning is still better for
me, but online meeting still has many advantages and I got a chance to boost myself-
learning skills.
SELF-REFLECTION ON TEAMWORK PROJECT
Roles and responsibilities
Our first problem was choosing the organization and idea for the product. “IncrEDIBLE
spoons” as well as the environmentally friendly product is not my favorite sector at first
because I found this market is lack of information on the Internet and the market is not
potential to develop. However, during working on this project, I realized that this carries
a good message to protect the environment and our planet is limited in resources with a
lifestyle that currently want to practice in my real life.
Throughout the team project, I was responsible to do the multiple tasks, but mostly I am
the secretary for the team’s meeting and sum up the information and tasks for others
members. I had chance to do the online research to collect the data so that we can analyze
for the Memo and final project. Besides, I also finished the promotion campaigns for
launching the new product and the market research to evaluate whether it is potential to
develop or not.
Carriers and Barriers
It is obvious that during the time working on the project, I faced many problems. The first
thing is that the date on the Internet is quite limited, so I need to do research with the
reliable sources. I learned how collect the primary data using the Google Forms tool and
many websites provided such as Google Public Data, Statistics, ...
I also found that my teamwork skills have been improved while working in the group
project. Before, I was lack of communication skills and hesitate to interact with other
members. But this course as well as the campaign of developing the new product required
group members to share and support each other. Thanks to that, my group project met the
deadline on time and successfully.
CONCLUSION
From my point of view, both my theory of product management and my practical
knowledge has been improved a lot. I firmly believe that I will be very successfully
implement such as knowledge in my future. Thanks to Product Management Course, I
had chances to explore more about myself, my weaknesses and strengths and find
solutions for that which can keep me on track of enhancing myself in the next course and
in the future.
