C. LESSON PROPER
“Materials and Digital Technology”
The internet and mobile technology is a sea of information and activities making its use during lessons a little
daunting, applying Lam and Hampel's [2007: 71] model for online task development to enable the capabilities of
technology to meet the demands of class learning objectives.
Most teachers seem to agree that using technology in the English language classroom is a norm, and using and
extending digital literacy skills is expected as a part of a 21st-century education curriculum ( Hasper, 2016).
EXAMPLES OF DIGITAL TOOLS/MATERIALS FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING:
• Voxopop - allows the students to share their ideas with others.
• Scrible.com- it allows students and teachers to annotate online texts with a highlighter and virtual sticky notes.
•Grammarman- allows students to revise various grammar points through comic strips
• Eyercize- offers students an opportunity to build up their reading speed.
• Bubblar- allows learners to create photo stories.
• Online Podcasts- ideal for listening exercises.
• FUSE- is a content library of teaching materials and educational resources. It covers traditional text resources,
multimedia, video and interactives.
• Boardmaker Online- provides a multi-level approach to creating engaging print and interactive materials for your
special education needs.
Storybird- aims to promote writing and reading skills in students through storytelling.
• Thinglink- allows educators to create interactive images with music, sounds, texts, and photographs.
• TED-ED- is an educational platform that allows creating educational lessons with the collaboration of teachers,
students, animators, generally people who want to expand knowledge and good ideas.
Saumell (2016), considers ways of helping to decide how and when to use technology based on 6 principles for
meaningful technology integration. These are:
Meaningful technology integration focuses on the learning task and not the technology.
It sounds obvious, but educational aims should always come first. What do you want to achieve? What are your aims
and objectives, either in terms of language or skills? Is there a tool that will allow you to do it better, faster or more
creatively than doing it in a traditional way?
Meaningful technology integration involves the students (as opposed to just the teachers) actively using the
technology.

The use of content creation tools should be placed in the hands of the students as well as the teachers. This will
empower them to create and share their language productions in a more meaningful way.
Meaningful technology integration addresses 21st century skills' issues and digital literacy training.
Many teachers worry about the dangers of social media and online collaboration. There are indeed issues that need
to be addressed if you are going to 'send your students online. This decision opens up the possibility of learning
about being responsible and cautious digital citizens. It is a necessary challenge that we need to take up.
Meaningful technology integration facilitates learning activities that would be more difficult or impossible without
the technology.
One undeniable benefit of technology is that it allows us to do things that were previously unthinkable or impossible.
We should therefore take advantage of this and choose tools that can take us beyond the traditional.
