SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Define linear equation


2. Understand the steps in drawing a linear graph
3. Draw a linear graph with given linear equation
4. Understand points in a linear graph

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES

Graph board, graph book, broomsticks, French curve and relevant computer
assisted instructions.

A line graph is used to compare two sets of data that are related in some way.
Most commonly, a line graph is used to show how something changes over time –
maybe over the course of a week, a year, or even longer

The data which changes over a period of time can be displayed through a linear
graph.

In line graph:

● Points are plotted on the graph related to two variables

● Points are joined by the line segments.

How to Construct a Line Graph?

Steps of construction of line graph:

On a graph, draw two lines perpendicular to each other intersecting at O. The


horizontal line is x-axis and vertical line is y-axis. Mark points at equal intervals
along x-axis and write the names of the data items whose values are to be
marked.
Along the y-axis, choose an appropriate scale considering the given values.

Now, make the points

Join each point with the successive point using a ruler. Thus, a line graph is
obtained.

Example 1: The following table gives the information of the sum scored by
McKay in 10 matches. Represent this information using line graph.

At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. Know the various methods of solving quadratic equations


2. Solve quadratics equation using graphical method
3. Make a table of values for the function which contains the values of x
and corresponding values of y
4. Obtain the roots of equations from quadratic graph

Quadratic graphs

A quadratic graph is produced when you have an equation of the form

𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐, where 𝑏 and 𝑐 can be zero but 𝑎 cannot be zero.

All quadratic graphs have a line of symmetry.

Positive quadratic graphs (where 𝑎 > 0) are U-shaped and have a turning point
at the bottom of the curve. Negative quadratic graphs (where𝑎 <) are ∩-shaped
and have a turning point at the top of the curve.

In solving quadratic equations graphically, follow these steps:

• Make a table of values for the function which contains the values of x and
corresponding values of y
• Choose a suitable scale for both x and y axes
• Plot the points on the graph

Example 1: draw the graph of the function y = x2 + 2x – 5 for values of x from -4 to


+3
