Course and Exam Description (CED) Scavenger Hunt

The CED put out by the College Board has all of the information about the AP Biology course.
As we move through the course, the CED will be a valuable resource. It is thorough and well
organized, but long. In order to familiarize yourself with CED, you will complete the following
scavenger hunt activity. Look through the CED PDF as you answer the questions below. The
pages that you should go to to answer the questions are indicated (NOTE: the page numbers
are the ones on the bottom corners of the actual pages, not the PDF page numbers).

Link to the CED:

(Page 12)
1. What are the 2 essential components of the AP Biology course framework?

Science Practices and Course Content.

(Pages 14-15)
2. What are the 6 science practices?

Concept Explanation, Visual Explanation, Questions and Methods, Representing

and Describing Data, Statistical Tests and Data Analysis, and Argumentation.

3. If you are asked to provide evidence to justify or support a claim, which science practice
does that fall under?

Argumentation.

4. Creating and interpreting graphs fall under which science practice?

Statistical Tests and Data Analysis.

5. Designing an experiment or proposing a hypothesis fall under which science practice?

Questions and Methods.

(Page 17-18)
6. How many “Big Ideas” are there in the AP Biology curriculum and what are they?

4. Evolution, Energetics, Information Storage and Transportation, and Systems

Interactions.

7. How many units are there in the AP Biology curriculum?

8. Which 3 units have the highest exam weight?

Natural Selection, Gene Expressions and Regulation, and Cellular Energetics.

(Page 20)
9. Look at the “Spiraling the Big Ideas” Chart. How does this help explain the importance of
these Big Ideas?

Check marks show how often the ideas are used.

(Pages 22-24) Course at a Glance.

10. What information is represented by the colored boxes to the left of each subtopic
heading?

The science practices used in each subtopic of the unit.

11. What information is represented by the black boxes to the left of each subtopic heading?

The big ideas used in the subtopics.

12. Which unit(s) has the most topics?

Cell structure and function.

13. Which unit(s) has the fewest topics?

Chemistry of Life.

(Skim through pages 29-41)

14. Look at page 34 as an example of a topic page. What do you think is the difference
between “Enduring understanding”, “Learning objective” and “Essential knowledge”.

Enduring understanding is the level of understanding we should continue to

have, learning objective is what our learning goal is, and essential knowledge is
the basics.

(Page 193)
15. How many multiple choice questions are there and how many minutes do you have to
complete them?

60 questions and we have 90 minutes to complete it.

16. How many Free-response questions (FRQs) are there and how many minutes do you
have to complete them?

6 FRQ’s and also 90 minutes to complete.

17. What is the difference between FRQs 1-2 vs 3-6?

1 and 2 are evaluating information, and the rest are the other science practices.

(Page 199) Task words

18. Read through the task word list. Choose 2 task words that you might have confused or
thought meant the same thing. Define them below and point out how they are different
tasks.

Evaluating and determining are different, because determining is a conclusion

and evaluating is the significance.

(Pages 214-215) Equations and Formulas

19. The Equations and Formula sheet will be provided to you during the AP exam and all
class assessments. You will not need to memorize anything on these 2 pages, rather
you will need to know when and how to use them.
Are there any equations or other information on these pages that you already know or
recognize?

There is a lot more math than there was in honors bio 1.

20. Now that you have taken the time to explore the CED, What are some new questions or
comments?

I’m nervous for this semester because this is my only non-CP class, but I’m
going to work hard to do well.
