BSMT2E Module 6 Lesson 6 Check-in Activity

Identify five kinds of alternative energy resources in the Philippines. Describe each of the
alternative energy sources and cite their locations/address in the Philippines with
accompanying pictures.

1. Hydro Power

In the Philippines, at least 21 hydroelectric power stations are currently operational. The
500 MW Wawa pumped storage project in Rizal province is another huge project in the works.
Olympia Violago Water & Power, a Philippine developer, inked a design, procurement, and
construction agreement with PowerChina in July of last year. It is expected to cost $1 billion and
will contribute significantly to the country's renewable energy goals, with commissioning
scheduled for 2022.

2. Solar Energy

Despite being physically located in an area that receives a substantial quantity of sunlight
each year, the Philippines has just lately implemented large-scale solar farms into the country. In
the Philippines, major solar farms may be found in Cavite, Pampanga, Ilocos Norte, and Cagayan
de Oro.

3. Wind Power

The best and most well-known location for wind turbines is in Ilocos Norte, the northern
province of the Philippines. This is one of the Philippines' largest wind farms. Wind power
accounts for a modest percentage of the Philippines' total energy output. The country's wind
energy sector has considerable potential, with the capacity to generate up to 76GW of electricity.
4. Geothermal Energy

Due to its location along the Ring of Fire zone of Pacific volcanoes, the Philippines is
one of the world's top providers of geothermal energy. The Philippines now has seven
geothermal fields that provide roughly 12% of the country's electricity, with plans to nearly
treble capacity by 2040. The Philippines Department of Energy has established short-term aims
of 183 MW (2016-2020), medium-term targets of 900 MW (2021-2025), and long-term targets
of 288 MW for geothermal power generation (2026 to 2030). By 2030, a total of 1,371 MW of
additional capacity will have been added (correlating with a total installed capacity of around
3,200 MW).

5. Biomass Energy

Agricultural crop residues, forest residues, animal waste, agro-industrial waste, municipal
solid waste, and aquatic biomass are all abundant biomass resources in the Philippines. In the
Philippines, the usage of commercially produced agricultural leftovers transformed into biofuels
is growing as fossil fuel prices rise. Currently, biomass technologies used in the Philippines
include the use of bagasse as boiler fuel for cogeneration; rice and coconut husks dryers for crop
drying; biomass gasifiers for mechanical and electrical applications; fuelwood and agricultural
wastes for oven kilns; and furnaces and cooking stoves for cooking and heating purposes. In
compared to other renewable energy or energy-efficient and greenhouse gas abatement
technologies, biomass technology has the most installations in the Philippines.
