FUNCTIONS
Sample Exam

PART I: TRUE or FALSE. Write T If the statement is True and F if it is False.

1. A function is a set of ordered pairs of real numbers in which no two distinct ordered pairs have
the same first element.
2. A relation is always a function.
3. According to the Vertical Line Test (VLT), a graph represents a one-to-one function if and only
if each vertical line intersects the graph in at most one point.
4. y4 =x is a function.
5. Domain is the set of inputs while range is the set of outputs.
6. A function that is defined by two or more equations over a specified domain is called a one-to-
one function.
7. For a function to be considered as one-to-one, every element of the domain must be paired to a
unique element in the range that it is not paired with any of the other elements of the domain.
8. A function is one-to-one if it passes the horizontal line test but not the vertical line test.
9. The domain of a function is equal to the range of its inverse and the range of the function is
equal to the domain of its inverse.
10. One of the properties of inverse function is that (f o f-1) (x) = x+ 1

PART II. MULTIPLE CHOICE. Choose the letter of the correct answer.

1. Which of the following relations is/are function/s?

foundation day. They found a supplier that sells t-shirt for ₱200.00 per piece but can charge to
₱18,000.00 for a bulk order of 100 shirts and ₱175.00 for each excess t-shirt after that. Use a
piecewise function to express the cost in terms of the number of t-shirt purchase

4. a. 𝑡(𝑠) = {18,000 + 175(𝑠 − 100), 𝑖𝑓 𝑠 > 100
b. 𝑡(𝑠) = {18,000 + 175(𝑠 − 100), 𝑖𝑓 𝑠 ≥ 100
c. 𝑡(𝑠) = {18,000 + 175𝑠, 𝑖𝑓 𝑠 > 100
d. 𝑡(𝑠) = {18,000 + 175𝑠, 𝑖𝑓 𝑠 ≤ 100

For numbers 5 - 6 use the problem below.

A jeepney ride in Lucena costs ₱ 9.00 for the first 4 kilometers, and each additional kilometers
adds ₱0.75 to the fare. Use a piecewise function to represent the jeepney fare F in terms of the
distance d in kilometers.
𝐹(𝑑) = { 5.________________
