About the Guidebook

Kindness is both natural and a choice-based emotion. We are naturally “Kind” to things or people we care about. This is ultimately stemming from self
preservation, because we want to care for the things which we feel that we desire for whatever reasons. Kindness is also a choice. We can choose to give a
homeless person some money, and that’s a kind gesture. We can choose to pick up something that was dropped by another and offer it back to them; just
as well we could choose to steal the item.

We are citizens of Pakistan as part of one great family. Rich or poor, educated or uneducated, belonging to one province or another, ultimately each one of
us is a Pakistani citizen like everyone else. Therefore, each of us has the same right to pursue happiness and avoid suffering. When you recognize that all
beings are equal in this respect, you instinctively feel empathy and closeness for them. Out of this, in turn, comes a genuine sense of national and then
universal responsibility; the wish to actively help others overcome their problems. Of course, this sort of compassion is by nature, peaceful and gentle, but
it is also very powerful. It is the true sign of inner strength.

Green Living Association, a part of the World Kindness Movement and Clean Up the World and partner of United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP),
arranges creative and charming activities to bring peace, social harmony and environmental wisdom among various segments of society in making a
harmonised Pakistani society and a Peaceful world. Our objective in the guidebooks is to inspire the participants for doing the "little things" to make big
differences in the lives of others. When we are inspired we start offering kindness in the name of love, not recognition, and we receive LOVE back from so
many of the people we reach out with our sincere acts and expressions of Kindness. This is human psychology - most of us are alike.

For the Parents and the School Administration

Because Kindness is a broad topic that covers many aspects of goodness, the Guidebooks present an ideal opportunity for team teaching. Firstly, it is an opportunity for the
parents (supporters) to explain the students the morale lessons from each story in accordance with their particular mental levels. For your practice, we have given few
working exercises in each guidebook. Please have a similar exercise after reading each story. We encourage science, social studies, English, and art teachers to work together
in planning a comprehensive plan of activities based on the ideas as given in the Guidebooks. And last but not the least; educate the children to be really careful and
conscious in practicing kindness to the people around especially in the background of increasing disharmony and untidiness in the society.

We are really thankful to the dedicated administration of our partner ‘Green Schools & Campuses’ for their indispensable role in the successful
implementation of this project. We believe, our valuable association with the partner schools will bring a real positive change in the society.

widespread acceptance. His acceptance
into the club. The university has sent me a
letter of acceptance.

Acceptance is one of the significant

expressions of kindness. It is the key
to convert momentary happiness to
enduring happiness. It helps you move
from feeling happy to actually being
happy. Practicing acceptance prepares you
to live in this changing world, where you
never know what’s going to happen next.
Acceptance is like protecting yourself with
your own shield.

Benevolence is to do good to others;
goodwill; charitableness: to be filled with
benevolence toward one's fellow
creatures, an act of kindness; a charitable
gift: She bequeathed many benevolences.

Benevolence is not an end in itself -- it is

a means to the end of your own life.
Benevolence is a commitment to achieving
the values derivable from life with other
people in society, by treating them as
potential trading partners, recognizing
their humanity, independence, and
individuality, and the harmony between
their interests and ours.

Compassion literally means “to suffer
together.” Among emotion researchers, it
is defined as the feeling that arises when
you are confronted with another’s
suffering and feel motivated to relieve it.

Feeling compassion implies action. Read

on to see why compassion is so important
in today's society. The world needs more
compassion. However, most people limit
themselves to feeling pity for the poor, for
migrants, and for the most marginalized
members of society.

The personal quality of decency is one of
honesty, good manners, and respect for
other people. Over time, decency has
referred to manners, but today decency is
mainly a strong sense of right and wrong,
and a high standard of honesty.

Decency is an inner moral compass,

projecting “the right thing to do” as born
from an intrinsic motivation. It is not fair,
in a sense of the golden rule of treating
others the way you would want them to
treat you.

Empathy is the capacity to understand or
feel what another person is experiencing
from within their frame of reference, that
is, the capacity to place oneself in
another's position. Empathy is often
described as the ability to feel what others
are feeling as if you are feeling it yourself.
To feel empathy for someone is
to empathize. People who do this are
described as empathetic.

In its real sense empathy is the ability to

recognize, understand, and share the
thoughts and feelings of another person,
animal, or fictional character.
Developing empathy is crucial for
establishing relationships and behaving
compassionately.

Psychologists generally define forgiveness
as a conscious, deliberate decision to
release feelings of resentment or
vengeance toward a person or group who
has harmed you, regardless of whether
they actually deserve your forgiveness.

Forgiveness is vitally important for

the mental health of those who have been
victimized. It propels people forward
rather than keeping them emotionally
engaged in an injustice or trauma.
Forgiveness has been shown to elevate
mood, enhance optimism, and guard
against anger, stress, anxiety, and
depression.

Gratitude is the expression of appreciation
for what one has. It is recognition of value
independent of monetary worth.
Spontaneously generated from within, it is
an affirmation of goodness and warmth.
This social emotion strengthens
relationships, and its roots run deep in
evolutionary history—emanating from the
survival value of helping others and being
helped in return.

Studies show that specific areas of the

brain are involved in experiencing and
expressing gratitude. Brain scans of people
assigned a task that stimulates expression
of gratitude show lasting changes in the
prefrontal cortex that heighten sensitivity
to future experiences of gratitude.

A humane person is one who shows great
compassion and caring for others,
including animals, and who tries whenever
possible to alleviate another's suffering.
The idea of being humane is linked to a
higher level of a person's character. While
the word is derived from the word human,
the sad fact is that a person can
be human without being humane.

Being humane is a general term that is

used to indicate sympathetic behaviour or
the simple act of presenting qualities that
are unique to and typical of a human
being. A humane person is usually
believed to be a compassionate individual
who possesses a higher intellect than
other animals.

An ideal student is someone who is thirsty

for knowledge and hence studies
dedicatedly. He or she is disciplined both
at home and in school and participate in
co-curriculum activities.

A student should not be one who takes

knowledge to be different and unique
from others or based on his studies he
wants to become someone who earns
more money than others. In addition to
being successful, he/she must have
kindness, compassion and concern for
other human beings and must contribute
his/her time, thought and energy to the
betterment of society and the well-being
of others.

Justice is the quality of being just;

righteousness, equitableness, or moral
rightness:

It means rightfulness or lawfulness, as of a

claim or title; justness of ground or
reason:

Justice is best understood as “giving to

others what is their due,” or to put it even
more simply, “fairness.” Both definitions
relate that human beings evaluate what
we owe to the people around us and what
is owed to us in return and operate based
on these judgments.

Knowledge, learning, erudition,
scholarship mean what is or can be known
by an individual or by humankind.
Knowledge applies to facts or ideas
acquired by study, investigation,
observation, or experience. Rich in the
knowledge of human nature learning
applies to knowledge acquired especially
through formal, often advanced,
schooling.

Knowledge helps you make better

decisions by giving you the power to be
more informed about yourself and the
world around you. It can help you speed-
read through complex issues and grasp
ideas quickly. With so much information
available, knowledge helps you to
determine what’s important and discard
the rest.

Love is a set of emotions, behaviours, and
beliefs with strong feelings of affection.
So, for example, a person might say he or
she loves his or her pet, loves freedom, or
loves nature. The concept of love may
become an unimaginable thing and also it
may happen to each person in a particular
way. Love has a variety of feelings,
emotions, and attitude.

Our desire to understand love is obvious

when you consider the numerous books,
articles, and talk shows dedicated to the
topic. People around the world deem love
as essential to happiness and look for it in
many different places. Books and movies
tell us what “real love” should look like —
and obviously, love has real strength to
change the world.

The term “morality” can be used either
descriptively to refer to certain codes of
conduct put forward by a society, state or
religion, or accepted by an individual for
her own behaviour, or normatively to
refer to a code of conduct that, given
specified conditions, would be put
forward by all rational people.

Morality refers to the set of standards

that enable people to live cooperatively
in groups. It’s what societies determine
to be “right” and “acceptable.”
Sometimes, acting in a moral manner
means individuals must sacrifice their
own short-term interests to benefit
society. Individuals who go against these
standards may be considered immoral.

Definition of niceness as in sweetness the

state or quality of having a pleasant or
agreeable manner in socializing with
others – (his unfailing niceness makes him
a great student to have in class).

Generally, niceness involves doing

something that is pleasing or agreeable.
By contrast, kindness is doing something
that is helpful to others, or that comes
from a place of benevolence. Kindness is
often expressed through actions that you
take for other people, while niceness
typically involves more superficial words
or simple gestures.

Openness to experience, or simply
openness, is a basic personality trait
denoting receptivity to new ideas and new
experiences. It is one of the five core
personality dimensions that drive
behaviour—known as the five-factor
model of personality, or the Big 5.

Openness involves being receptive to a

wide variety of ideas, arguments, and
information. Being open is generally
considered a positive quality. It is
necessary in order to think critically and
rationally. Being open to newer ideas and
thoughts not only helps us in learning
beneficial ideas but also helps us in
developing a peaceful and modern
society.

The ability to wait, or to continue doing
something despite difficulties, or to suffer
without complaining or becoming
annoyed: You have to have a lot of
patience when you're dealing with kids. In
the end I lost my patience and shouted at
her. He's a good teacher, but he doesn't
have much patience with the slower
pupils.

Patience makes it easier to live because it

reduces negative emotions like stress,
anger, or frustration. When one is patient,
one is calmer and more open to changes.
Those who understand the importance of
being patient try to stay calm and focused
even in situations where waiting is not
easy. Patience is an important life skill.

Personal qualities are the characteristics,
attributes or personality traits that make
up and reflect who you are. Examples
include honesty, dependability or having a
good sense of humour or being
dependable. Personal qualities are highly
important for teamwork, group dynamics,
building relationships and in day-to-day
interactions with colleagues, managers or
clients. As you search for jobs, it's
important to understand the personal
qualities employers search for and value.

One of the qualities of a good student, as

well as a good performer, is responsibility.
They never blame their mistakes or flaws
on excuses; instead, they accept full
responsibility for their acts and accept the
consequences of their actions.

Respect is caring how words and actions
may impact others. Respect has two parts:
1) having respect for someone because of
how their actions impact others and 2)
showing respect by changing your actions
to be sure you don't have a negative
impact. Respect is caring enough to
consider how words and actions impact
others.

Receiving respect from others is important

because it helps us to feel safe and to
express ourselves. Being respected by
important people in our lives growing up
teaches us how to be respectful toward
others. Respect means that you accept
somebody for who they are, even when
they’re different from you or you don’t
agree with them.

Sympathy denotes the tendency, practice, or
capacity to share in the feelings of others,
especially their distress, sorrow, or unfulfilled
desires. Sympathy is the broadest of these
terms, signifying a general kinship with
another's feelings, no matter of what kind: in
sympathy with her yearning for peace and
freedom; to extend sympathy to the bereaved
Compassion implies a deep sympathy for the
sorrows or troubles of another coupled to a
powerful urge to alleviate the pain or
suffering.

Sympathy is feeling bad for someone else

because of something that has happened to
them. We often talk about it and feel
sympathetic when someone has died, or
something bad has happened, saying ‘Give
them my sympathy ’, or ‘ I really feel for them
’. As a concept, sympathy is closely connected
to both empathy and compassion.

“Tolerance, as we define it, refers to
the skills we need to live together
peacefully. In times of peace, people have
a chance to prosper socially, economically
and emotionally. Tolerance creates a
society in which people can feel valued
and respected, and in which there is room
for every person, each with their own
ideas, thoughts and dreams.

Tolerance is most needed when we don’t

agree with someone, or when they are
different from us. ‘It’s about learning to
discuss things and argue with people
without getting angry or upset.’ Often, we
can be outspoken with our own opinions –
for example, about politics – and this can
influence our children’s viewpoints.

cause. Students united to express their
solidarity for environmental conservation.

together. In other words, you can say that

Unity is really important because it

provides strength, power, and courage. When
people come together, they can achieve more
than they could individually. Unity is often
seen in the workplace, where team members
work together to complete a task. It is also
seen in local communities where people come
together to help each other.

Generally, value has been taken to

mean moral ideas, cultural or societal
goods, general conceptions or orientations
towards the nation or world or sometimes
simply interests, attitudes, preferences,
needs, sentiments and dispositions.

Values are guides to human behaviour. In

philosophy, values are crucial for ethical
decision-making. In psychology, they’re
the core of what makes a life meaningful,
moving away from short-term satisfaction
to long-term fulfilment. Values have great
strength in building and uniting the nation.

Welcome means to greet (someone) in a

warm and friendly manner. She welcomed
the students into her home. We welcome you
to the event.

The word welcome comes from Classical

English wilcuma, which suggests ‘a desired or
preferred guest’. Later on, its use as a phatic
speech gained preference. This form of
expression uses language to convey social
pleasantries rather than information.

A warm and sincere welcome gives a sense

of caring and makes people feel appreciated,
as well as making them feel that they have
made a good choice in using a business in
preference to others. Nurturing these
relationships is a crucial part of growing a
successful business – this takes time,
commitment and enthusiasm.

The word Xiexie means grace, graciousness,

or giving thanks (gratitude). Xiexie or
Gratitude is a thankful appreciation for what
an individual receives, whether tangible or
intangible. With gratitude, people
acknowledge the goodness in their lives. In
the process, people usually recognize that the
source of that goodness lies at least partially
outside them. As a result, being grateful also
helps people connect to something larger
than themselves as individuals — whether to
other people, nature, or a higher power.

In modern psychology research, gratitude is

strongly and consistently associated with
greater happiness. Gratitude helps people feel
more positive emotions, relish good
experiences, improve their health, deal with
adversity, and build strong relationships.

"Yummy" is simply "yum" in adjective

form. Most early human vocalizations are
simple and repeated, e.g. "Mama",
"Papa", "Baba", etc. Babies are thought to
express pleasure with their food by saying,

often used to indicate pure/primal
enjoyment, even by a well-experienced
speaker of English.

It is a widely held belief that success in life

and enjoyment of life go hand in hand,
and that is certainly true. It is also widely
believed that success is the cause of
enjoyment.

Zeal: A Virtue Most Necessary to
Overcome Sloth and Moral Sleepiness One
of the great virtues related to charity is
zeal. Zeal is the ardour of charity; it is love
burning brightly. It is a fiery love for God,
for His gracious truth, and for the
salvation of souls.

A feeling of gusto and enthusiasm for

something, especially achieving a positive
objective through energy and enthusiasm
can be called zeal. People have zeal for
sports teams, bands, causes, and (often,
but not always) their jobs. If you have
passion for something, you have zeal,
which is kind of a mix of eagerness and
energy and devotion. The best kind of zeal
is to plan and contribute one’s time,
thought and energy for the development
of society.
