Good Friday is a Christian holiday in which the death of Jesus of Nazareth is
commemorated. It is celebrated during Holy Week, after Holy Thursday, and before
Resurrection or Easter Sunday.
On this day, the Catholic Church commands its faithful, as penance, to fast and
abstain from meat. The Eucharist is not celebrated either, but rather the liturgy of
the Passion of the Lord

Good Friday is, fundamentally, a day of mourning during which the crucifixion of
Jesus Christ on Calvary is remembered, who sacrificed himself to save humanity
from sin and give him eternal life. Hence the cross has been taken as the symbol
of glory for the worship of Christians.
In this regard, Peter writes in the Bible: "For Christ also suffered once for sins, the
just for the unjust, to bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but made
alive in the spirit." (1 Peter, 3: 18).

Cover images of Jesus
On this day, in the churches, the images —mainly the crucifix— are covered with
purple cloth, as a sign of the absence of Jesus.
The purpose is to give the liturgy the characteristic sobriety of the recollection that
calls for the death of Jesus, and to reflect on the mystery of the passion, death and
resurrection of Christ.
The images are unveiled on Easter Sunday, as a symbol of the Resurrection of
Jesus

those around him.
After this, they stripped Jesus Nazareno of his clothes, while the crowd whipped
him and spit on him. During his procession to a place called Golgotha, on the
outskirts of Jerusalem, they put a crown of thorns on him and made him carry his
own cross.
