Identifying Appropriate Test Statistics Involving Population Mean
I. Fill in the blanks with the correct word or phrase to make the statements true.
1. Population variance (σ 2) is the average of the distances from each data point in the population
to the mean, squared.
2. When the sample size is greater than or equal to 30 and the population standard deviation is
known, we use z-test test statistic.
3. When the sample size is less than 30 and the population standard deviation is known, we use z-
test test statistic.
4. When the population standard deviation is unknown and the sample size is less than 30, we use
t-test test statistic.
5. When the population standard deviation is unknown and the sample size is greater than or equal
to 30, we use z-test test statistic.
II. In the following real-life situations, enumerate all given data (symbols and values with units), then
identify the appropriate test statistic to be used.
1. One of the undersecretaries of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) claims that the
average salary of civil engineers is PHP19,000.00. A sample of 19 civil engineers’ salary has a
mean of PHP18,350.00 and a standard deviation of PHP1,330.00.
Given: Test statistic to be used: t-test
μ=PHP 19,000.00
'
n=19 civil engineer s salary
x=PHP 18 , 350.00
s=PHP 1,330.00
2. The national average baptismal cost includes 50 guests. A random sample of 32 baptisms during
the past year in Tarlac Province had a mean of 53 guests and a standard deviation of 10 guests.
Given: Test statistic to be used: z-
test
μ=50 guests
n=32 baptismsduring past year ∈Tarlac Province
x=53 guests
s=10 guests
3. A researcher reports that the average salary of company managers is PHP64,000.00 and a
standard deviation of PHP5,350.00. A sample of 35 company managers has a mean salary of
PHP66,800.
Given: Test statistic to be used: z-
test
μ=PHP 64,000.00
σ =PHP 5,350.00
x=PHP 66,800.00
n=35 company managers
4. A researcher used a 100-item developed problem-solving test to 50 randomly selected Grade 6
pupils. In this sample, the mean score is 80 points and a standard deviation of 10 points. The
mean and standard deviation of all Grade 6 pupils were 77 points and 15 points respectively.
Given: Test statistic to be used: z-
test
μ=77 points
σ =15 points
n=50 randomly selected Grade 6 pupils
x=80 points
s=10 points
5. The director of the secretarial school believes that its graduates can type an average of 75 words
per minute. A random sample of 12 graduates has been found to have an average of 77.2 words
per minute with a standard deviation of 7.9 words per minute in a typing test.
Given: Test statistic to be used: t-test
μ=75 words per minute
n=12 graduates
x=77.2 words per minute
s=7.9 words per minute
