Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 6 Self – Learning Module on Giving the

translation of real-life verbal expressions and equations into letters or symbols and
vice versa.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from
Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-In-Charge Schools Division
Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin in partnership with the Local
Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto.
The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using the Most
Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) while overcoming their personal, social,
and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners
as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics 6 Self- Learning Module on Giving the translation of

real-life verbal expressions and equations into letters or symbols and vice versa.

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning material while being an active learner.

This module has the following parts and corresponding icons:

Expectation - These are what you will be able to know after completing the
lessons in the module

LESSON

THINK AND UNDERSTAND

Problem:
There are 75 Covid patients in a certain hospital. The males are15
more than females. Translates this into an expression and equation.

Solution:
The phrase more than implies addition thus, the expression will be f+15.
Let: f be the number of females
f+15= number of males
Total number of Covid patients = f+f+15
75 = 2f+ 15
Writing into an equation: 2f + 15=75

An equation can be defined as a mathematical statement consisting of an

equal symbol between two algebraic expressions that have the same value.
While an expression is a sentence with a minimum of two numbers and at
least one math operation. This math operation can be addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division.

Read and understand the different terms used in mathematical operations.

What are the mathematical terms used in the phrases or sentences?

What terms denote addition, subtraction, multiplication or division?

The table below shows how some phrases and sentences are translated into
algebraic expressions or equations.

Mathematical phrases/sentences Algebraic

expressions/equations
five less than twice x 2x-5
the square of the sum of x and y ( x + y)2
Four more than thrice a number is 16 3x + 4= 16
The product of x and 8 divided by 2 is 20 8x÷2=20

Solution:
1. five less than twice x
The keyword is less than referring to subtraction and twice x means 2 times
x or 2 multiply by x. So, 2x will come first followed by 5 because of the term
less than.
2. the square of the sum of x and y
The mathematical terms used are sum means addition and square of which
means double the number. Simply, write the exponent 2 with the enclose
expressions (x + y)2.
3. Four more than thrice a number is 16.
One of the terms used is more than which pertains to addition. The number
before it will come after the plus sign. Thrice denotes multiplication meaning
three times and is means equal to. Thus, the translation was 3x+ 4 = 16.
4. The product of x and 8 divided by 2 is 20.
The keyword is product which used in multiplication. So, multiply x by 8.Then
it is obvious that divided by is used in division. Therefore, the result is
8x÷2=20
The skill that we learned above help us to represent quantities in real-life
situations.
Let’s have another example.

Example 1:
Jericho is x years old.
a. Represent his age 6 years ago.
b. Represent his age 12 years from now.
Solution:
6 yrs ago Present age 12 yrs from now
x
x– 6 x+ 12

Let x be Jericho’s present age.

a. The phrase ago implies subtraction; hence, the expression will be
x - 6.
b. The word from now implies addition; hence, the expression will be
x + 12.
