Logical Reasoning 03
CLOCKS
Important Facts

The face or dial of a watch is a circle whose circumference is divided into 60 equal parts, called
minute spaces.
A clock has two hands, the smaller one is called the hour hand or short hand while the larger one
is called the minute hand or long hand.
(i) In 60 minutes, the minute hand gains 55 minutes on the hour hand.
(ii) In every hour, both the hands coincide once.
(iii) The hands are in the same straight line when they are coincident or opposite to each other.
(iv) When the two hands are at right angles, they are 15 minute spaces apart.
(v) When the hands are in opposite directions, they are 30 minute spaces apart.
(vi) Angle traced by hour hand in 12 hrs = 3600
(vii) Angle traced by minute hand in 60 min. = 3600

Too Fast and Too Slow: If a watch or a clock indicates 8.15, when the correct time is 8, it is said
to be 15 minutes too fast.
On the other hand, if it indicates 7.45, when the correct time is 8, it is said to be 15 minutes too
slow.
5
Bothe the hands of a clock are together after every 6511min. So, if both the hands are meeting after
5
an interval less than 65 min, the clock is running fast and if they meet after an interval greater
11
5
than 6511min, the clock is running slow.

Interchange of Hands: Whenever the hands of the clock interchange positions (i.e., the minute
hand takes the place of hour hand and the hour hand and takes the place of minute hand), the
sum of the angles traced by hour hand and minute hand is 3600.
Suppose this happens after x minutes.
Angle traced by minute hand in x min = (6x)0.
Angle taced by hour hand in x min = (0.5x)0.

0.5x + 6x = 360
6.5x = 360
3600 5
x= 65
= 55 13.

5
Thus, the hands of a clock interchange positions after every 55 13
minutes.

Ex. 1, Find the angle between the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock when the time is
3,25.

Sol. Angle traced by the hour hand in 12 hours = 360°.

www.PercentileClasses.in No Substitute to Hardwork

Angle traced by it in 3 hrs 25 min., i.e.
41 360 41 o 10
hrs = ( × ) = 102 2
12 12 12
Angle traced by minute hand in 60 min. = 360°.
360 o
Angle traced by it in 25 min. = ( 60 × 25) =150°.
10 10
Required angle = ((1500 − 102 2 ) = 47 2 .

Ex, 2. At what time between 2 and 3 o'clock will the hands of a clock be together?

Sol, At 2 o'clock, the hour hand is at 2 and the minute hand is at 12, i.e. they are 10 min. spaces
apart.
To be together, the minute hand must gain 10 minutes over the hour hand.
Now, 55 minutes are gained by it in 60 min.

60 10
10 minutes will be gained in (55 × 10) min. = 10 11 min.min .
10
The hands will coincide at 10 min. past 2.
11

Ex. 3, At what time between 4 and 5 o'clock will the hands of a clock be at -right angle?

Sol, At 4 o'clock, the minute hand will be 20 min. spaces behind the hour hand.
Now, when the two hands are at right angles, they are 15 ntin. spaces apart,
So, they are at right angles in following two cases.

Case I. When minute is 15 min. spaces behind the hour hand :

In this case min. hand will have to gain {20 - 15) = 5 minute spaces.
55 min. spaces are gained by it in 60 min.
60 5
5 rain, spaces will be gained by it in ( × 5) min. = 5 min.
55 11

5
They are at right angles at 5 min. past 4.
11

Case II. When the minute hand is 15 min. of the hour hand :
To be in position, the minute hand will have to gain. (20 + 15) = 35 minute spaces.
55 min. spaces are gained in 60 min.
35 min. spaces are gained in
60 2
(55 × 35) min. = 38 11 min.
2
They are at right angles at 38 min. past 4.
11

Ex. 4, Find at time between 8 and 9 o'clock will the of a clock be in the straight line but not
together,

Sol, At 8 o'clock, the hour hand is at 8 and the minute hand is at 12, i.e. the two hands are 20
min. spaces apart.
To be in the same straight line but not together they will be 30 minute spaces apart,

www.PercentileClasses.in No Substitute to Hardwork

So, the minute hand will have to gain (30 - 20) = 10 minute spaces over the hour hand.
55 minute spaces are gained in 60 min.

60 10
10 minute spaces will be gained in (55 × 10) min. = 10 11 min. past 8.

10
The hands will be in the same straight line but not together at 10 min. past 8.
11

Ex, 5. At what time between 5 and 6 o'clock are the hands of a clock 3 minutes apart?

Sol At 5 o'clock, the minute hand is 25 min. spaces behind the hour hand.
Case I. Minute hand is 3 min. spaces behind the hour hand.
In this case, the minute hand has to gain (25 - 3) = 22 minute spaces.
55 min. are gained in 60 min.
60
22 min. are gained in ( × 22)min. = 24 min.
55
The hands will be 3 min. apart at 24 min. past 5.

Case II. Minute hand is 3 min. spaces ahead of the hour hand.
In this case, the minute hand has to gain (25 + 3) - 28 minute spaces.
55 min. are gained in 60 min.
60 5
28 min. are gained, in (55 × 28) = 31 11 min.
5
The hands will be 3 min. apart at 3111 min. past 5.

Ex. 6. The minute hand of a clock overtakes the hour hand at intervals of 65 minutes of the correct
time. How much a day does the clock gain or lose?

Sol, In a correct clock, the minute hand gains 55 min. spaces over the hour hand in 60 minutes.
To be together again, the minute hand must gain 60-minutes over the hour hand.
55 min. are gained in 60 min.
60 5
60 min. are gained in (55 × 60) min. = 6511 min.
But, they are together after 65 min.
5 5
Gain in 65 min. = (65 11 − 65) min.= 11
min .
5 60×24 10
Gain in 24 hours = 11
× 65
min. = 10 43
min.
10
The clock gains 1043 minutes in 24 hours.

Ex, 7. A gains uniformly, is 5 min, slow at 8 o'clock in the morning on and it is 5 min. 48 sec. fast
at 8 p.m. on following Sunday. When was it correct?
Sol. Time from. 8 a.m. on Sunday to 8 p.m., on following Sunday = 7 days 12 hours = 180 hours.
4 54
The watch, gains (5 + 5 5) rnin. or 5
min. in 180 hrs.
54
Now 5
mim. are gained in 180 hrs.

5
5 min. are gained in (180 × × 5)hrs. = 83 hrs 20 min. = 3 days 11 hrs 20 min.
54
Watch is correct 3 days 11 hrs 20 min. after 8 a.m. of Sunday,
It will be correct at 20 min. past 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

Reflex angle = 360°− (312 2 − 150) = 3600 − 162 2

8. In 12 hours, the hands coincide or are in opposite direction 22 times.

In 24 hours, the hands coincide or are in opposite direction 44 times a day.

9. The hands of a clock point in opposite directions (in the same straight line) 11 times in every 12
hours (Because between 5 and 7 they point in opposite directions at 6 o'clock only). So, in a day,
the hands point in the opposite directions 22 times.

10. Time gained in 1 hour = 6 min.

Time gained in 6 hours = (6x6) min = 36 min.
After 6 hours, the correct time is 11:00 a.m. and the watch will show 11:36 a.m.

11. Time lost in 1 hour = 5 min.

Time lost in 6 hours = (5x6) min = 30 min.
www.PercentileClasses.in No Substitute to Hardwork
After 6 hours, the correct time will be 6 a.m. and the clock will show 5.30 a.m.

12. At 3 o' clock, the minute hand is 15 min spaces behind the hour hand.
Thus, the minute hand has to gain (15 + 18) = 33 minute spaces.
55 min are gained in 60 min.
60
33 min are gained in ( × 33) = 36 𝑚𝑖𝑛.
55
The hands will be 18 min spaces apart at 3:36 P.M.

13. 55 min. spaces are covered in 60 min.

60 min. spaces are covered in
60 5
(55 × 60) 𝑚𝑖𝑛. = 65 11 min.
5 16
Loss in 64 min. = (65 − 64) = 𝑚𝑖𝑛.
11 11
16 1 8
Loss in 24 hrs = (11 × 64 × 24 × 60) 𝑚𝑖𝑛, = 32 11 𝑚𝑖𝑛.

14. To be together between 9 and 10 o'clock, the minute hand has to gain 45 min. spaces.
55 min. spaces are gained in 60 min.
60 1
45 min. spaces are gained in ( × 45) min. or 49 min.
55 11
1
The hands are together at 49 min. past 9.
11

15. At 4 o'clock, the hands of the watch are 20 min. spaces apart.
To be in opposite directions, they must be 30 min. spaces apart.
Minute hand will have to gain 50 min. spaces.
55 min. spaces are gained in 60 min.
60 6
50 min. spaces are gained in (55 × 50) 𝑚𝑖𝑛. 𝑜𝑟 54 11 𝑚𝑖𝑛.
6
Required time = 54 11
min. past 4.

16. To be together between 8 A.M. and 9 A.M, the minute hand has to gain 40 min spaces.
55 min. spaces are gained in 60 min.
60 7
40 min. spaces are gained in( × 40) min = 43 min.
55 11
7
So, Henry started his trip at 4311min past 8 A.M.
Now, to be 180° apart, the hands must be 30 min spaces apart.
At 2 P.M, they are 10 min spaces apart.
The minute hand will have to gain (10+30) = 40 min spaces.
7
As calculated above, 40 min. spaces are gained in 43 min
11

7
So, Henry's trip ended at 4311min past 2 P.M.
7
Duration of travel = Duration from 43 min past 8
11
7
A.M. to 4311min past 2 P.M. = 6 hours.
