PN 2003898 Rev A
The purpose of this document is to demonstrate how to set a CoPilot to a fixed IP address. This
document assumes that the CoPilot is in its default network configuration. The procedure is done in
Windows 7, but the same basic method applies to other versions of Windows as well.
Steps:
7. Press “OK” to close this window. Press “Close” to close the Local Area Connection Properties
window. Press “Close” to close the “Local Area Connection Status window. Keep the “Network
and Sharing Center” open, as we will use it again later.
8. Open a Command Prompt (one way to do this is to type “CMD” and Enter into the Search bar).
9. Once Command Prompt is open, type “ipconfig” and press Enter. Scroll up until you find the
properties for the “Local Area Connection”. Confirm that the IP address shown follows the form
of “169.254.xxx.xxx”, where “xxx” is an integer between 0 and 255.
13. Once Orion has detected your printer, it will show the screen below. Check the box next to your
printer’s information and press “OK”. Answer “Yes” at the prompt.
14. Again in the printer list, right-click on the printer that you just added and select “Configure
Printer”.
15. In this window, click on the “Network Configuration” tab, click the combo box labeled “Use the
following IP address, enter your desired IP address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway. Orion
will show an error if you enter any of these incorrectly. When you have finished, press the
“Save” button in the ribbon bar under the “Tools” heading to download this configuration to the
printer. Once this step is complete, the printer is now set to a fixed IP address.
16. Steps 16 through 19 explain how to return your PC to a fixed IP address. Back in the “Network
and Sharing Center” window, again click on “Local Area Connection” as in Step 3.
17. Click on “Properties” as in Step 4.
18. Select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and press the “Properties” button as in Step 5.
19. In this window, select the “Use the following IP address” combo box and insert a fixed IP address
and Subnet Mask, along with any other desired network settings. Be careful to insert a valid IP
address and Subnet to match what you entered for your printer. In my example, I set the
printer to 192.168.2.3 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0; this means that the IP address for
my PC should follow the form of “192.168.2.xxx”, where “xxx” is a number between 0 and 255
that is not 3 and that the Subnet Mask should also be “255.255.255.0”.
