Ghosting
Ghosting
Ghosting is a millennial word, and its definition for me is leaving or not interacting with someone
without notice. It can happen for various reasons, intentionally or unintentionally, and it is something that
occurs in both casual and long-term relationships. Ghosting involves disappearing without explanation or
communication, so the person being left behind is left wondering if they did something wrong or if they
were abandoned. More often than that, ghosting comes from a lack of communication. This can be
intentional when one party decides to detach without explicit communication, or unintentional when several
failed attempts at communication fall on deaf ears. Regardless of the intention, ghosting creates confusion,
distress, and anxiety in the person who has been left behind.
I have experienced being ghosted by my friend in Elementary. She was my neighbor, and we went
to the same school. Her parents transferred her to our local school, and eventually, we became friends. We
had a lot of fun together. We share a lot of interests. But it wasn't until a few months after graduation that
things started to change. Her parents decided to go back to their hometown to take care of her grandparents.
We only contact each other through Facebook. After a year, our communication ended. She doesn't respond
to any of my chats anymore. After a month of reaching out to her, I decided to stop and not bother her since
she didn't want to talk to me anymore. Maybe she found a friend who is better than me. You see, when
someone ghosted you or stopped interacting with you, you questioned your worth and you became
conscious.
The effects of ghosting really can be far-reaching, especially for the young generations of today. To
begin with, it can have severe implications on their self-worth and feelings of worthlessness. They may be
preoccupied with the fact that the person chose to suddenly disconnect without any explanation and may
become excessively self-critical. Furthermore, ghosting can prevent a young person from developing a
greater sense of resilience and trust; by having their trust violated in this way, whereby someone disappears
without an explanation, these teenagers may struggle in trusting others in the future and become greatly
affected by similar types of situations.
Ghosting can be a difficult and overwhelming experience, however, it is far from impossible to
reach a mutual understanding and appreciation of the situation. By taking the time to practice self-reflection
and understanding. Maybe it's also a realization that not all people who come into our lives will stay;
sometimes they come to give us experiences and lessons that will help us become the best version of
ourselves.
