1.0 SCOPE AND DEFINITIONS

1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for external painting of piping,
structures and equipment installed onshore and above-ground.

1.2 Within this specification the following definitions shall apply:

The PRINCIPAL is the party which initiates the project and ultimately specifies the
technical requirements. The Principal may also include an agent or consultant
authorized to act for the principal.

The CONTRACTOR is the party who carries out all or part of the design, engineering,
procurement, construction and commissioning of a project. The principal may
sometimes undertake all or part of the duties of the contractor.

The PURCHASER is the party which buys the equipment, its auxiliaries and all
associated equipment for its own use or as agent for the owner. The Purchaser may be
either Principal or Contractor.

The VENDOR is the party who manufactures and/or supplies the equipment to perform
the duties specified by the contractor.

1.3 This specification covers particular materials information and application procedures for
use in applying a paint system consisting of primer and a high-build polyurethane
topcoat.

2.0 GENERAL

2.1 Solvent Cleaning

Prior to sandblasting the surface to be painted, all grease and oil contaminated surfaces
shall be solvent cleaned.

2.2 Preparation for Abrasive Blasting

2
All equipment and flange facings which could be damaged by abrasive blasting shall be
protected prior to abrasive blasting. All sharp edges, especially around bolt holes, shall
also be ground smooth before abrasive blasting.

2.3 Abrasive Blasting Cleaning

2
All steel surfaces to be prepared for painting shall first have all dirt, scale, and any other
foreign matter removed by means of near white blast cleaning according to SSPC-SP-
10. Blasted profile shall be 1-1/2 to 2 mils (.04 to .05 mm). Visual appearance of blasted
steel surfaces shall correspond to NACE No. 2 near-white metal abrasive blasting, as
determined by TM-01-70.

Repairs to existing coating shall be accomplished by abrasive blasting the repair area to
near white metal abrasive blasting and anchor pattern blasting the competent coating.
Total surface area to be recoated.

3.0 COATING APPLICATION

3.1 General

All coatings shall be applied in accordance with Manufacturer's Recommendations.

3.2 Primer
2
After blasting abrasives and other contaminants have been removed from the blasted
surface, the coating material recommended in Section 5.0 shall be correctly applied in
accordance with the paint manufacturer’s recommendations, and these specifications, to
a dry surface. Spray application of the coating material is required. Brush application
may only be used for repair of holidays and hard-to-coat areas, or with the written
consent of PURCHASER’s designated representative. Manufacturer’s recommended
thinner shall be used in amounts not to exceed the specified maximum thinning ratio.

3.3 Climatic Conditions

Primer coat shall not be applied if the ambient temperature is below 40°F or when the
dew point temperature of the air is less than 5°F bel ow the temperature of the steel.
Weather conditions and other atmospheric suitability shall be agreed with the
PRINCIPAL

3.4 Priming Schedule

2
All abrasive surfaces shall be primed the same day they are abrasive, and prior to the
formation of any oxides. Metal surfaces that exhibit rust, oil, or any other contamination
prior to application of the primer shall be recleaned and reblasted to the originally
specified surface finish before priming.

3.5 Potlife

After the curing agent has been mixed with the base component, the resulting mixture
has a limited potlife. This potlife will vary, depending on the ambient temperature.

Any material that has exceeded the manufacturer's recommended potlife or shows signs
of having reached the end of its potlife (thickening, lack of film build) shall be discarded.

3.6 Mechanical Mixer

VENDOR's spray pot must contain a mechanical mixer. This mixer must be operated
continuously during application of this primer.

3.7 Thinning

This primer may be thinned to improve spraying characteristics at various ambient

temperatures. Manufacturer's recommended thinner shall be used in amounts not to
exceed the specified maximum thinning ratio.

3.8 Coating Manufacturer

Primer, topcoat and thinners used for this paint system must all be supplied by same
manufacturer. Color(s) shall be green RAL 6016 - Türkisgrün.

4.0 INSPECTION

4.1 The responsibility for quality control and inspection rests with the VENDOR; however,
PURCHASER may inspect the materials equipment and painting during all phases of
the work.

4.2 VENDOR shall permit PURCHASER's inspector to have unrestricted access to all areas
of VENDOR’s facilities (including subcontractors' facilities) where any phase of the work
covered by this specification is being performed.

4.3 VENDOR shall refer all questions relating to quality control, testing and acceptance of
the work to INSPECTOR.

4.4 Inspection

Primer coat shall be subject to inspection by PURCHASER's representative before

being topcoated. Misses or skimps in the paint film shall be repaired after initial primer
coat has cured a minimum of two hours. Primer repairs shall be allowed to cure a
minimum of twenty-four hours at 75°F or equivalent, as outlined above, before
topcoating.

4.5 For internal coatings only, after the final topcoat has been allowed to cure, the entire
coated surface is subject to be inspected by PURCHASER’s representative for holidays
with a VENDOR representative for holidays with a VENDOR supplied Tinker and Rasor
M-1 holiday detector, or similar device. All holidays, misses or skips in the coating shall
be identified for VENDOR for repair after the topcoat has cured for five hours at 75°F, or
equivalent temperature as recommended by paint manufacturer.

5.0 MATERIALS

5.1 The following provides a list of approved coating systems and outlines where these
systems are to be used. The coating systems are listed according to supplier. The
Contractor may indicate a preference of supplier, however Purchaser reserves the right
to make the final selection. Once a supplier has been chosen for a specific project, that
supplier will remain the supplier throughout the project. Paint systems of one supplier
shall not be mixed with systems or products of another.

5.2 Colors of individual coats are specified to provide contrast with the existing surface.
Finish coat colors are often project specific. Information on colors must be confirmed by
Purchaser prior to ordering coatings. All coatings must be free of lead and chromates.

Notes applicable to the Carboline Systems:

1. Carbo Zinc 11 VOC or 11 HS should be substituted for Carbo Zinc 11 where local regulations require.
2. Carboline 190 HB may be substituted for Carboline 893 where local regulations permit.
3. Substitute Carboline 888 or Carboline 890 LT for 893 when a low temperature curing product is needed.

2 4. Substitute Carbomastic 15FC for Carbomastic 15 when a low temperature curing product is needed.

5. Carbothane 134 , or 134 HS may be substituted for Carbothane 134 HG where local regulations permit.
6. Carboline 658 or 858 may be substituted for Carboline 859 where local regulations permit.

7. Carbo Weld 11 or Carbo Weld 7 may be substituted for Carbo Weld 11WB where local regulations permit.
2 8. For System 4A, it is acceptable to use Carboline Thermaline 4900 in Black up to 450°F (230°C), Gray up to 400°
(205°C)F, or White up to 400° F (205°C). Temperatu res of 500°F (260°C) will cause discoloration, but not affect

6.1 Structural Steel and Grating - Galvanized coating shall be per ASTM Specification A-
123, except coating weight in ounces per square foot shall not average less than 2.5
ounces and no individual specimen shall show less than 2.0 ounces.

6.2 Pipe - Galvanized coatings shall be per ASTM A-120 for purchased pipe or as specified
above for structural steel.

6.3 Manufactured Items - Hot dipped galvanizing of bolts, nuts, washers and miscellaneous
manufactured items shall be in accordance with ASTM A-153.

6.4 All cutting, shaping, drilling of all holes and welding shall redone before galvanizing.
Individual components shall be galvanized separately.
