Dll-Stat & Prob Week 5

This document contains a lesson plan on teaching the concepts of variance and standard deviation of discrete random variables. The objectives are to illustrate and calculate the variance of a discrete random variable, interpret the variance, and solve problems involving variance of probability distributions. The lesson plan provides examples of steps to find variance and standard deviation, including working through practice problems. Formative assessments are included to evaluate student learning.

Finding the variance of a data set.

A. Reviewing previous
lessons or presenting the
new lesson (ELICIT)

B. Establishing a purpose The variance and standard deviation describe the amount of spread,
for the lesson ( ENGAGE) dispersion, or variability of the items in a distribution.
How do you describe the spread or dispersion in a probability distribution?
C. Presenting Examples/ Steps in Finding the Variance and Standard Deviation of a Discrete Probability
instances of the new Distribution
lesson(Pre-activity) 1. Find the mean of the probability distribution.
2. Subtract the mean from each value of the random variable X.
3. Square the results obtained in Step 2.
4. Multiply the results obtained in Step 3 by the corresponding
probability.
5. Get the sum of the results obtained in Step 4.

new skills #1 (EXPLORE)
Step 1.
Find the mean of the probability distribution using
the formula μ=∑X• P(X)

Step 2.
Subtract the mean from each value of the random
variable X.

Step 3.
Square the results obtained in Step 2.

Step 4.
Multiply the results obtained in Step 3 by the corresponding probability.

Step 5.
Get the sum of the results obtained in Step 4. The result is the value of the
variance. So, the formula for the variance is:
σ2 = Σ(X – μ)2 • P(X).

Step 6.
Get the square root of the variance to get the standard deviation.

The variance of the probability distribution is 1.56.

The standard deviation is σ = √1.56 = 1.25.

1. Find the variance and standard deviation of the probability distribution of

the random variable X, which can take only the values 3, 5, and 7, given that
P(3)= 7/30,P(5)= 1/3,andP(7)=13/30

2. The probabilities of a machine manufacturing 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 defective parts in

one day are 0.75, 0.17, 0.04, 0.025, 0.01, and 0.005, respectively. Find the variance
and standard deviation of the probability distribution.
