Dll-Stat & Prob Week 5
Dll-Stat & Prob Week 5
Department of Education
Region III – Central Luzon
Schools Division of Bulacan
Guiguinto National Vocational High School
Guiguinto, Bulacan
I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content Standard The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of random variables
and probability distributions.
B. Performance Standard The learner is able to apply an appropriate random variable for a given real-life
problem (such as in decision making and games of chance).
III. LEARNING
RESOURCES
A. References
1. Teacher’s Guide pages Teaching Guide for Senior High School, Statistics and Probability
2. Learner’s Material Student’s Module / Learner’s Activity Sheet
3. Textbook pages Belecina, R. S., Baccay, E. S., & Mateo, E. B. (2016). Statistics and Probability

4. Additional Material
from Learning Resource
(LR) Portal
B. Other Learning
Resources
A. Reviewing previous
lessons or presenting the
new lesson (ELICIT)
B. Establishing a purpose The variance and standard deviation describe the amount of spread,
for the lesson ( ENGAGE) dispersion, or variability of the items in a distribution.
How do you describe the spread or dispersion in a probability distribution?
C. Presenting Examples/ Steps in Finding the Variance and Standard Deviation of a Discrete Probability
instances of the new Distribution
lesson(Pre-activity) 1. Find the mean of the probability distribution.
2. Subtract the mean from each value of the random variable X.
3. Square the results obtained in Step 2.
4. Multiply the results obtained in Step 3 by the corresponding
probability.
5. Get the sum of the results obtained in Step 4.
The number of cars sold per day at a local car dealership, along with its
D. Discussing new corresponding probabilities, is shown in the succeeding table. Compute the
concepts and practicing variance and the standard deviation of the probability distribution.
new skills #1 (EXPLORE)
Step 1.
Find the mean of the probability distribution using
the formula μ=∑X• P(X)
Step 2.
Subtract the mean from each value of the random
variable X.
Step 3.
Square the results obtained in Step 2.
Step 4.
Multiply the results obtained in Step 3 by the corresponding probability.
Step 5.
Get the sum of the results obtained in Step 4. The result is the value of the
variance. So, the formula for the variance is:
σ2 = Σ(X – μ)2 • P(X).

concepts and practicing Distribution
new skills #2
(EXPLORE) 1. Find the mean of the probability distribution.
2. Multiply the square of the value of the random variable X by its
corresponding probability.
3. Get the sum of the results obtained in Step 2.
4. Subtract the mean from the results obtained in Step 3.
F. Developing mastery
