This document provides an overview of systems of equations and different methods for solving them. It discusses what a system of equations is, defines linear systems, and describes the substitution and elimination methods for solving systems of two variables. It also discusses solving systems graphically and gives examples of solving simultaneous linear systems with three variables and mixed linear/non-linear systems using substitution. Sample problems and exercises with solutions are provided.

3.0 SYSTEM OF EQUATIONS
3.1 System of Equations
What is a linear system?
• A "system" of equations is a set or collection of equations that you deal with all together at once. Linear equations (ones that graph as straight lines) are simpler than non-linear equations, and the simplest linear system is one with two equations and two variables.
What is the method of substitution?
The method of solving "by substitution" works by solving one of the equations (you choose which one) for one of the variables (you choose which one), and then plugging this back into the METHODS SOLVING
other equation, "substituting" for the chosen variable and solving
for the other. Then you back-solve for the first variable.
How do you do the elimination method?
In order to use the elimination method, you have to create variables that have the same coefficient—then you can eliminate them. Multiply the top equation by 5. Next add the equations, and solve for y. Substitute y = 10 into one of the original equations to find x.
How do you solve a system of equations graphically?
The first step is to graph each of the given equations, then find the point of intersection of the two lines, which is the solution to the system of equations. If the two lines are parallel, then the solution to the system is the null set.
