Cruz, Carloui - Activity 3

The document provides a definition of poetry from an online source. According to the source, poetry is the act of reading a poem, which allows the reader to gradually refine their understanding of what poetry is with each new poem. The definition explains that poetry uses elements like rhythm, sound, imagery and figurative language to modulate emotion and pacing. It also demonstrates movement in rhetoric and character. The student then explains in their own words that poetry is a form of literature defined by rules of rhyme and meter, and uses language to create beauty and intensity in the expression of feelings and ideas.

ACTIVITY 3

Instructions: Look for a simple definition of poetry. Then, explain briefly the meaning of the
definition that you will find. Do not forget to cite your reference on where you get it (title of
the book or online source) as well as the name of the person you are quoting. There is a
rubric
below for you to be guided on how you will be graded in this activity.

Definition of Poetry
Definition of poetry is the act and the experience of reading a poem. For every poem I read,
I redefine poetry, little by little, so that I’m always, consciously or unconsciously, grappling with what
it is and can be. This can happen poem to poem in a single collection, or it may arrive through the
serendipitous juxtaposition of a poem I sought out and another that someone gave me. Just
yesterday, I spent a lot of time with two poems, “Inversnaid” by Gerard Manley Hopkins and “At the
Tribunals” by Patrick Rosal, while leading sessions on sound and music in poetry at a teen writing
camp. In our discussion, we considered the ways in which the sounds of language can modulate
emotion and tone; control the pacing; onomatopoetically produce ambient sound effects; and
demonstrate movements and arcs in rhetoric and character.

Explanation:

Poetry is a literature often describe as a harmony between words and rhythm. It also
defines it to have some set of standard or governing rules on rhyme and meter that may
employs the arrangement of syllables in each line which strung the words together to form
sounds, image and idea that can modulate emotion and tone, control of the pacing and
produce ambient sound effects and environment and demonstrate movements and arcs in
rhetoric and character. These set of rules on meter and rhyme must have a rhythmic quality
and seek to create beauty through their words. These forms can be too complex or abstract
to describe a special intensity given to the expression of feelings and ideas.
According to Philips, To be able to understand the definition of poetry, the act of reading
a poem is itself helps to give an idea little by little on the patterns and expression to be refined
so we can be able to identify a literature that can be considered as a poem.
