A True Winner
I On 2nd December 2012, Spanish long-distance runner Iván Fernández Anaya became famous around
the world. His fame was not the result of winning a race. In fact, Iván chose not to win even though he
had the opportunity to do so. His thoughtful act gained him the respect of millions of people who value
kindness.
II
It was a winter’s day in Burlada, Navarre. The Kenyan Abel Mutai, a bronze medallist from the London
Olympics, was the clear favourite to win the race. The race began as expected. Mutai was leading
comfortably and Iván was trailing behind him in second place. It looked as though Mutai was certain to
win. And then Mutai made a mistake. He stopped 20 metres before the finish line, thinking he had
already crossed it and that the race was over. As Iván closed in on the Kenyan, who was standing still,
he had a clear choice. He could take advantage of the Kenyan’s confusion and pass him to win the
race. Alternatively, he could alert Mutai to his error and help him to win the race.
III
Amazingly, Iván’s sense of compassion and fair play overcame his sense of competition and he chose
not to exploit his rival’s error. Instead of passing Mutai, Iván slowed down and told Mutai to keep
running. The Spanish runner patted Matai on his back and pushed him to continue to the actual finish
line and to win.
IV Iván’s coach, Martín Fiz, was let down by Iván’s choice. He claimed that although Iván’s actions were
admirable, athletes have to attempt to win at all costs. Iván’s act of kindness showed him that Iván
would never become a top athlete.
V Yet, despite this criticism, Iván continued to believe that he had done the right thing. In the weeks that
followed, he gained thousands of Facebook and Twitter followers. It is not yet clear whether Iván will
ever become a top-class athlete or whether his coach will be proved right. In any event, he will always
be remembered for reminding the world that sometimes, winning isn’t the most important thing.
