Problem Set 4

This problem set focuses on developing skills in frequency response analysis and control system design. Students will analyze open and closed-loop systems using Bode plots, Nyquist diagrams, and stability criteria like phase and gain margin. The problem set contains two main problems: [1] analyzing a feedback control system using frequency response techniques to determine stabilizing gain values, and [2] modeling a heat exchanger control loop, designing a PI controller, and evaluating stability margins both analytically and graphically. Completing the problem set will help students gain experience applying frequency response methods for control system analysis and design.

CHE 510: PROCESS CONTROL & INSTRUMENTATION

PROBLEM SET 4

Assigned out: 20/03/2023 Due date: 1 week

Goals: The main goals of this problem set are to equip students with the following skills sets:

1) ability to generate frequency response plots,

2) ability to apply frequency response techniques for control system design.

Time: This problem set will require you to put in an average of 3 hours. Don’t be intimidated by this.
It doesn’t have to be all at once. You can take break in between. Please have fun while solving the
problem. Best wishes!

[1] Consider the feedback control system shown in Fig.1 below with the
following transfer functions:

(a) Plot a Bode diagram for the open-loop transfer function and use it to
determine the maximum value of Kc that will stabilize the closed-
system.
(b) Plot the nyquist diagram for the open-loop transfer function and use it
to determine the maximum value of 𝐾𝑐 that will stabilize the closed-
loop system
(c) Calculate the value of 𝐾𝑐 that provides a phase margin of 30o.
(d) Determine the gain margin of the closed-loop system when 𝐾𝑐 =10

[2] The dynamic behavior of the heat exchanger shown in Fig. 2 can be
described by the following transfer functions:
Fig.2

The valve lift x is measured in inches. Other symbols are defied in Fig.2.
(a) Draw a block diagram for the control system from the P&ID.

(b) Parameterize a PI controller for the temperature controller (TC) using the
Ziegler–Nichols settings.
(c) With the PI controller obtained in (b) above, Calculate the corresponding
gain and phase margins using both the analytical and graphical method.
Comment on the robustness of the designed controller.
