Word Problem Involving Functions

This document discusses word problems involving functions. It provides examples of different types of functions including linear, constant, and quadratic functions. It then gives sample word problems and shows how to represent the relationships using functions and evaluate them to find the solution. The word problems deal with calculating wages earned from working a certain number of hours or earnings from recycling a given number of bottles. Functions are used to model the relationships and find the output value for a given input.

Word problem involving functions

Word problem

It is a mathematical exercise where significant background information on the problem is

presented in ordinary language rather than in mathematical notation

The types of functions:

Linear function- It is a function that represents of a straight line on the coordinate plane. It is
also define as a without exponent Y = x+1 is an example of linear function other example is
Y = 3x -2 It represents a straight line on a coordinate plane and hence it represents a linear
function.

Constant function- Is a function with the same range of multiple values of the domain. This are

the example of constant function y= , y = -3, y = π . These function called constant function
2
since the output (y) is fixed for each.

Quadratic function- Is one of the form f(x) = ax 2 + bx + c where a, b, and c are numbers with a
not equal to zero graph of quadratic function is curved called parabola it may open upward or
downward.

• DEFINITION •

• A piecewise function is a function that is defined on a sequence of intervals.

And these are sample questions about word problems involving functions:
Q1. How much is the student’s wage if she worked for 10 hours?
Y = 30x or F (x) = 30 x
30 = payment per hour
X-Represents the number of hours she’s working.
y = 30x find the value of y when x = 10
y = 30(10)
y = 300
Therefore, the student’s wage is Php 300 when she’s worked for 10 hours
f(x) = 30x
f(10) =30(10)
f(10)= 300
Therefore, the student’s wage is Php 300 when he/she’s worked for 10 hours

Q2. Student assistance at a certain university are paid Php 20 per hour plus Php 10 tip all in all.
How much is the student’s wage if he worked for 5 hours?
Y = 20x + 10 or f(x) = 20x + 10
20 = payment per hour +10 tip
X = represents the number of hours he’s working
Y= 20x + 10 find the value of y when x = 5
Y = 20(5) + 10
Y = 100 + 10
Therefore, the student’s wage is Php 110 when he’s worked for 5 hours
F(x) = 20x + 10
F(5) = 20(5) + 10
F(5) = 100 + 10 = 110
Therefore, the student’s wage is Php 110 when he’s worked for 5 hours

Q3. A recycling center pays Php 3 for each bottle. How much is the customer’s earnings when
he/she has 60 bottles?
Y = 3x or f(x) = 3x
3 = payment per bottle
X = represents the number of bottles
Y = 3x find the value of y when x = 60
Y = 3 (60)
Y = 180
Therefore, the customer’s earnings is Php 180 when he/she has 60 bottles.
F(x) = 3x
F(60) = 3x
F(60) = 3(60) = 180
Therefore, the customer’s earnings is Php 180 when he/she has 60 bottles.
