BACKGROUND

People have always had a need to travel, be it to explore and discover new lands
or for our own enjoyment. Tourism covers precisely the latter.
We can trace the origin of the modern concept of tourism back to the 17th
century, when young nobles from western and northern European countries
made what was called the Grand Tour: a trip around Europe (usually covering
France, Germany, Italy and Greece) with the main purpose of soaking up history,
art and cultural heritage. It was considered a perfect way to be educated.
By the 18th century, this custom was widespread among wealthier classes, and it
spread to other parts of the world, such as America. Similarly, religious
pilgrimages that were already popular during the Middle Ages continued during
this period.
The 19th century saw the creation of the first travel agencies. One of the pioneers
was Thomas Cook & Son, which was the first to offer excursions and holidays for
groups, which included transport, accommodation and food tickets, thus making
costs cheaper. This would be the origin of what we now know as package
holidays.
As one of the developing countries in Africa, Ethiopia and its tourism are
becoming an important sector contributing a great deal towards the social,
cultural, and economic development aspects of the country (MoCT, 2011).
According to the MoCT report, Ethiopia has hosted a total of 478,890 foreign
tourists during the first two quarters of the current budget year. Similarly, the
country has also earned 1,792,964,160 US dollars from international tourists. This
income surpasses the income registered at the same time last year by
404,842,160 US dollars (MoCT, 2016). The report also states that the country
received 88 thousand tourists per month and the average length of stay is 16
days.

The Proposed System

TRAVEL GUIDE JAN 17, 2023

The system we are proposing “Duka Journey” is a mobile application which will be
used as a travel guide in Ethiopia’s most famous and popular tourist destinations,
churches and monastery, places with natural attractions and more.
It allows the user to navigate using the built in map and the links of a more
detailed maps from other sites without using or heiring a travel guid personnel, it
includes weather forecasting, currency details, local language of the destination
so the tourist can communicate with the most common words, navigation system,
photos of the destinations and ratings of the place, recommends hotels with their
price and rating and book a hotel.
With all this features it will make it easy for the tourist to navigate and enjoy their
journey.

General Objective
The main goal we are about to achieve with this app “Duka Journey” is to make
the tourism of this country be technologically advanced in some ways, to create a
self-managing environment for the tourist so they can enjoy their journey freely
in their own company.

Specific Objective
This app is going to achieve
 Allows the user of the app(tourist) to navigate by them self independently
which can save a lot of money to pay for the travel agencies.
 More to the upper benefit, it allows the user(tourist) to secure their privacy
even more.
 With the apps built in recommendation feature, it recommends the user to
visit places on the way to their main destination.
 The app will forecast daily weather reports and gives advice whether they
should go or stay, what to wear and many more.

 The app have a feature that allows the user to learn the destinations most
common local language, norms, so the user may interact easily and not get
confused while their stay there.
 It will let the user to book a hotel and know the ratings, prices, foods so
they can choose what suits them.
 It will include currency converter, so the user (mostly foreigners) know how
much it costs them in their own currency
 And also lets the user to put on comments and ratings of their experience
of the destination so when other tourists want to go there they can access
the previous users data and decide whether to go or stay.

Significance of the Project

Scope of the Project

With this app we are planning to achieve that to provide a well-defined and easy
to use application which makes it easy to go in and out into a tourist destination

only using the app by them self, the time we are in(21 st century) is more advanced
and applications like this will make life easier and allows us to interact with the
technologies this time is providing us.

Limitations Of the Project

We separated the limitations we faced while we are making this research in the
fact of their magnitude.
Major Limitation
This limitation occurred while we were gathering information about the existing
system from travel agencies. Their main fear was the application will take away
their customers because the app will ensure an independent tour, which makes
the agencies not welcoming to us while our visit to gain info.
Minor Limitation
This a so-called limitation was occurred inside the school, most of the travel
agencies asked for a letter from the school (department) head to make sure we
are legit to have the information they provided us. But the school was to late to
give us the needed letter in time.

Methodologies and Techniques

Data collecting methods and techniques
On making this application we used two types of data gathering
1. primary source
2. secondary source

Primary Source
Our primary sources were personnels in the travel and tour agencies, we asked
them how they operate, what are their main difficulties, the problems they had in
this work, things they want to be improved if the chances are found, it helped us
to know more about the business and helped us to make improvements and solve
the existing problems.

Secondary Source
These sources are the internet, books, and peoples who are indirectly connected
to the business, and these information's were additional, and we used them to
know more about the same apps like this who are only operating in foreign
countries.
