Trends, networks and Critical Thinking Skills in the 21st Century is one of the
specialized subjects under the Academic track and the HUMSS learning strand. It
seeks to develop among students a deep and thorough understanding of global
trends and issues that affect to become more increasingly concerned with these
global issues and cultivate in them a sense of commitment to become socially
responsive and responsible individuals.
This module aims to lead students to become more increasingly concerned
with these major global issues and cultivate in them a sense of commitment to
become socially responsive and responsible individuals.
All information and data are taken from different resources to come up with a
material that can supply the learning needs and abilities of the students in this
subject. However, some examples are originally made and/or localized to make it
more meaningful to the students. There are also activities for practice in the hope
of enhancing the writing skills of the students towards the composition of essays.
The activities and assessment tools in this module provide concrete, critical
ways of comprehending and appreciating the different topics. In addition, the topics
and the tools form a primary composite issue of globalization, the parts of which
the students critically analyze.
Content Standard: The learner understands the consequences of personal and
local action to global and planetary climate change.
Performance Standards: The learner:
1) analyzes how production and consumption habits contribute to the problem of
climate change and explain why.
2) writes a resolution that you can share with your friends about how you can
personally contribute towards solving the problem of climate change.
Learning Competencies:
: Explain the effects of consumption and production patterns that contribute to the
problem of climate change. (HUMSS_MCT12-Ih-i-2)
: Discuss personal contributions that can actually solve the problem of climate
change. (HUMSS_MCT12-Ih-i-3)
: Make a stand on how the consequences of one’s action affect the lives of others
and the environment. (HUMSS_MCT12-Ih-i-4
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. cite personal contributions or activities that can help reduce the problems on
climate change;
2. list activities that care for the environment;
3. enumerate problems and negative effects caused by global warming; and
4. make a stand on how the consequences of one’s action affect the lives of
others and the environment.

In your past module, you have learned Roles of Parts of a Whole and Creative
Imagination. We defined parts as subdivisions into which something is or is regarded
as divided and which together constitute the whole. The word whole is simply defined
as the completeness of the parts or components.
Creative imagination involves the formation of creation of mental images. It is the
ability of the mind to transcend its limits, explore the unseen, and thread the path it
would not normally take. When you translate your imagination into reality, you are a
creator of reality.
3
Picture Analysis: Below are photos of effects of climate change.
Processing Questions:
1. What can you say about the photos above?
2. How do you describe the trends of climate change at the present?
3. What is climate change in your own opinion?
The concept of planetary network emphasizes that everything on earth is
interconnected. Whatever happens to one element on earth has effect to the other
components.
Planetary networks refer to the interconnections and interrelations among the
various elements in the natural environment enveloping and affecting Earth as well as
beyond Earth’s surface. It includes the rain, the wind, the sun’s rays, gasses and other
climate-related elements.
Global warming is a phenomenon which refers to the rising of global average
temperature on Earth’s surface due to the thinning of the ozone layer in Earth’s
atmosphere. Ozone stays high up in the atmosphere where it is formed, and its huge
quantity is enough to form shield for earth against the sun’s ultraviolet rays. Ultraviolet
rays can cause cornea damage and skin cancer; stunt the growth and food
manufacturing process of green plants and destroy the floating microorganisms at the
base of the ocean food chain. Global warming causes changes in the climate patterns
and weather cycles of the Earth.
4
Climate change refers to the major changes in the climate that last for long
periods of time. Climate refers to the prevailing set of atmospheric conditions such as
temperature and humidity of a place within a span of time. Weather is the atmospheric
condition involving hot or cold, rainy or dry, cloudy or clear sky and stormy or calm in
a short period of time (Arzadon et.al 2015).
The Effects of Consumption and Production Patterns on Climate Change
Production refers to how people generate and manufacture the products they
need to use, sell, or consume. Almost everything comes from natural resources which
are depleted every time they are used. If production pattern is characterized by heavy
dependence on coal, the problem of climate change will be more aggravated. China,
for instance, has large coal mines and relief on them for its energy requirements. This
makes China one of the most polluted countries on Earth. Dependence on petroleum
in the manufacture and production of goods makes U.S. produced 23 percent of global
carbon emission, while it makes eastern European countries, including Russia,
produce 14 percent of carbon emission (Harper 2001). These only show that the more
progressive the country is, the more they contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer
and the worsening of global warming and climate change. www.shsph.blogspot.com
6.
Consumption refers to the use of economic or consumer goods and resources.
Consumption patterns can be categorized as individual, family, company and
government consumption. It is the main reason why we need to use our resources.
Ecosystem has the ability to regenerate, sustain and adjust what is lost, but with the
excessive use of land resources, ecosystem will be destroyed. In economics, the more
consumption, the more demand, the more demand the more production, the more
production the more extraction to natural resources, the more extraction the faster for
the resources to destroy. The resources in our environment are limited but the need
for production and consumption is unlimited.
Ecosystem- network that links all living beings with one another (ex. food chain).
Biodiversity- variety of life on earth which includes all organisms, species, and
populations and their genetic variations.
Habitat change- encroachment of humans on habitats for use in their purposes result
in destruction (ex. cutting down of forests and destruction of coral reefs)
Overexploitation- lack of awareness on the limits of the world’s natural resources (ex.
excessive logging and fishing)
Invasive species- when invasive species introduce to a habitat, it naturally destroys
the system or order in that habitat. (Ex. janitor fish on fishponds and jelly fish in fresh
water dams)
5
Causes of Climate Change
1. Water Vapour (H20)-is considered as the most abundant greenhouse gas.
2. Carbon Dioxide (CO2)- is the principal greenhouse gas that contributes to
climate change. t released through natural processes.
3. Methane (CH4)- is a hydrocarbon gas produced by natural sources and human
activities which includes the decomposition of waste.
4. Nitrous Oxide (N2O)- are used as coolants foaming agents fire extinguisher
solvents, pesticides, and aerosol propellants.
5. Human activities- e.g. changes in land use, and emission pollutants
Impacts of Climate Change in the Philippines
1. El Nino phenomenon will intensify
2. The sea surface temperature will rise
3. Ocean acidification
4. Sea levels will rise by 4 to 6 meters
5. Tropical cyclones will intensify
6. Rainfall, river flow, and flooding will intensify
Effects of Climate Change
1. Rise in temperature
2. Changes in the pattern of precipitation
3. Droughts and heat waves intensity
4. Strengths and intensify of typhoons and hurricanes will increase
5. Rise of sea level by one to four by 2100
6. Shrinking ice sheets
7. Ocean acidification
Simple things you can do to help fight climate change:
1. Save energy. Saving energy not only saves you money but helps you cut carbon
emissions too. For example, refrain from using your cellphone while charging.
2. Improve your diet. When buying fruits and vegetables, try to buy organic. Organic
foods are healthier because they contain fewer harmful substances, but growing them
also protects the environment and the climate.
3. Saving water at home. Clean water that is pumped to most homes has been
treated which uses lots of energy.
4. Recycling. It can really help stop climate change because re-using materials
usually uses less energy. www.shsph.blogspot.com 7
5. Compost food scraps. If leftovers, peels, cores and cuttings were composted, they
would reduce emissions and help protect healthy soil.
6
6. Plant trees. Trees help suck carbon out of the air and stabilize the climate.
7. Avoid plastic wherever you can. Almost every plastic is produced from fossil fuels
and in every single phase of its life cycle, plastic emits greenhouse gases.
8. Get on your bike. Bicycle is still the number one form of sustainable transportation.
9. Be informed and support. Support organizations that hold companies to account
for the environmental practices.
10. Sharing is caring! If we own less and use more things collectively, we need to
produce fewer things and that saves on resources. Sharing cars, exchanging clothes,
lending and borrowing tools are multiple different possibilities for collective
consumption.

More By Sylvia Stults
Published: October 2015
The sands of time have rendered fear,
Blue skies on high no longer clear;
Stars were bright whence they came,
Now dimmed, obscured, pollution's haze.
Crystal clear our waters gleamed,
Fish abundant, rivers streamed;
Ocean floors sandy white,
Now littered, brown, pollution's plight.
Trees towered high above,
Trunks baring professed love;
Birds chirping from sites unseen,
Gone, paper joined pollution's team.
One can't blame pollution alone,
As they say, you reap what you've sown;
So let us plant a better seed,
Tear out old roots, cultivate, weed.
Protect what has been given for free,
Our waters, skies, wildlife and trees;
For once they're gone, don't you say,
Consider yourself warned of that fatal day.

What I Have Learned
The concept of planetary network emphasizes that everything on Earth are
interconnected. Whatever happens to one element on Earth has effect to the
remaining components.
Climate Change refers to the major changes in the climate pattern that last for
a long period of time, up to decades or more. Different areas on Earth experience
warmer-than-average temperatures, as well as wetter-that-average and drier-than-
average conditions. Scientist now have recorded El Niño-La Niña phenomena that
disrupt the normal weather pattern on the planet.
What I Can Do
1. The problems entailing climate change are threatening human existence. What
can you do to prevent the problems from getting worse? How will you
encourage your friends and the government to support you? Focus your
advocacy on one dimension (water, air, land, wilderness) of the environment.
