Flow Through Sluice Gate PDF

This lab report investigates flow through an open sluice gate. The objectives are to study the operating characteristics of a sluice gate in an open channel. Water flow is measured for different gate openings and heads using a flume, stopwatch and measuring cylinder. The theoretical discharge is calculated and compared to the actual discharge to determine the coefficient of discharge. Observations of water depth, time and discharge are recorded for 4 trials with varying gate openings and heads.

Lab report on: Flow through open sluice gate

TITLE: "FLOW THROUGH OPEN SLUICE GATE"
OBJECTIVES:

 To investigate the operating characteristics of a sluice gate in an open channel

APPARATUS REQUIRED:

i. Open channel flume

ii. Stop watch
iii. Measuring cylinder.

THEORY:

i. Open channel flow:

The flow of liquid with free surface having constant pressure such as atmospheric pressure is
defined as open channel flow. In any flow, if the fluid flows without filling the pipe or the flow
has a free surface and the flow occurs due to the slope of pipe/conduit, then it is said to be open
channel flow.
ii. Sluice gate:
The flow of water through opening is called sluice, which is controlled by means of gate known as
sluice gate. A sluice gate may have water on one side of the gate or on both side of the gate.
Sluice gates are used in irrigation systems for controlling flow rate. Study of characteristics of
sluice gates provides information essential for their hydraulics design. Sluice gates are commonly
are used to control water levels and flow rates in rivers and canals. They also are used in wastewater
treatment plants.
The discharge of flow through a rectangular orifice is given as
(Qth) = A√2𝑔𝐻
Where, A= area of gate opening
H= head over gate
Qth = Theoretical discharge
g= acceleration due to gravity
𝑉
And, Actual discharge through orifice (Qact) = 𝑡

Where, v = volume
t = time
iii. Coefficient of Discharge (Cd):
It is the ratio of actual discharge passing through the orifice to theoretical discharge.
𝑄𝑎𝑐𝑡
Cd = 𝑄𝑡ℎ
PROCEDURE:

1. The sluice gate was opened.

2. The water pump was turned on and the valve was opened.
3. The water depths y1 and y2 were measured for free flow after the water level was constant.
4. The discharge measured on the downstream by using measuring cylinder.
5. The weir was adjusted on the downstream of the flume until the Eddy current occurred downstream of the
gate. The water depth y1 and y3 for a submerge flow were measured after the water level was maintained
constant.
6. The weir was adjusted to get different 3 more points of y1 and y3.
7. The processes were repeated for different discharges.

OBSERVATION:

Width of the flume/gate (b) = 50*10-3 m

DISCUSSION & CONCLUSION:

In this experiment, we used the open channel to understand the operating characteristics of sluice gate by
calculating the actual and theoretical discharge of that open channel flow varying the opening of the sluice
gate.
