BIBI KHADIJA BINT KHUWAYLID RA:

Khadijah RA was the daughter of Khuwalid ibn Assad who belonged to a wealthy
family of the Quraysh. Her father was a successful merchant and had left her a
great wealth. She was the best of all the women of her time. Before the advent
of Islam, she was called Tahirah (the pure one). She was twice married and
widowed and had three children from her previous husbands, Harith, Hind, and
Hinda. She used to send her merchandise for trading to other countries.
Muhammad PBUH was recommended to her for his honesty and
trustworthiness. He took her merchandise to Syria and brought back huge
profits. Mayserah, her slave, who accompanied him in that trip, spoke very highly
of Muhammad Khadijah was so impressed by him that she proposed marriage
through her friend Nafeesa, which he accepted after consulting his uncle Abu
Talib. At the time of marriage, Khadijah was forty years old while Muhammad
was twenty-five.
The marriage was successful. They had six children, two sons, and four
daughters; both the sons, died in infancy. The elder was Qasim by whom the
Prophet had his Kuniya; he was called Abu Qasim, (the father of Qasim). The
younger son was 'Abdullah, who was known as at-Tayyib and at-Tahir. The
daughters were Zaynab, Ruqayyah, Umm Kulthoom, and Fatimah. All the
daughters passed away during the life of Prophet PBUH except Fatima RA.
The marriage freed Muhammad from his financial worries as Khadijah se placed
her wealth at his disposal. She brought wealth, prestige and influence to

time of hardship and trials.

cousin Waraqah bin Naufal who further assured him that he was ordained by
Allah to be a Messenger.
Khadijah RA was the first woman to believe in the message of Muhammad.
Jibraeel AS would often ask the Holy Prophet to give Salam to her. Furthermore,
she was one of the four women mentioned as the best women of all times by the
Holy Prophet PBUH when he said:
"The best of the women are four; Mariyam bint Imran, Khadijah bint
Khuwaylid, Fatima bint Muhammad, and Aasia the wife of Pharoah."
(Musnad Ahmad, Tirmizi)
She was the only wife of the Prophet who suffered persecution of the early days
of Islam and suffered the most at time of Boycott. She died, at the age of 65, in

BIBI SAWDAH BINT ZAMA’A RA:

She was the daughter of Zam'aa bin Qaiys, from the tribe of Quraish. She was the
first woman whom the Prophet married after Khadijah. Previously she was
married to her cousin, Sukran bin Amr. They were among the earliest people to
accept Islam and later migrated to Abyssinia.
She came back from Abyssinia about the time when Khadijah RA died. Some days
later Sakran also died. Saudah did not have anyone to look after her. The matter
was brought into the notice of the Prophet who after careful consideration
decided to marry her as he had children and household matters needed
attention. She was in her fifties when she became the wife of the Prophet PBUH.
Marriage to Saudah was an act of kindness as well as convenience.
She had a reputation for her manners and decency of behaviour. Five narrations
have been reported from her which are recorded in Sahih-Al-Bukhari and the
four Sunan*. Afterwards when the Prophet divided his time equally among his
wives, Saudah RA gave her time to Aisha RA.
She was amongst the firmest believers in Islam. When the Prophet told his
wivesduring the Hajjat-ul-Wida (Farewell Pilgrimage) to stay at home after his
death, Sawdah was so staunch that she always remained in her house and would
say: "I have done Hajj and Umrah and now as per the commandment of
Rasullullah, I would stay at home."
She died in Madinah during the caliphate of Umar in 22 AH.

BIBI AISHA BINT ABU BAKR RA:

She was the daughter of Abu Bakr, the first Caliph of Islam. She was one of the
most knowledgeable women among the Companions and is considered by many
scholars to be among the top most jurists and scholars of Hadith. She was born a
Muslim and would say that she had never seen her parents practise anything
other than Islam. Her marriage contract was performed with the Holy Prophet
two years before Hijrah (migration), when she was 6 and after the battle of Badr,
at the age of 9, she moved into the house of the Holy Prophet. She remained
with the Holy Prophet till his demise.

Aisha RA reported,
"I used to play with the dolls in the presence of the Prophet, and my girl friends
also used to play with me. When Allah’s apostle used to enter (my dwelling
place) they used to hide themselves, but the Prophet PBUH would call them to
join and play with me."(Sahih Bukhari)

The verses of Tayammum were revealed when the Muslims were delayed on her
account in a desert. 'A'isha lost her necklace during a journey, the Messenger of
Allah, stopped to look for it. There was no water nearby, and the Companions
had to pray without Wudu, when they mentioned it to the Prophet the verses of
Tayammum were revealed ordering Muslims to perform Tayammum in case
water was not available.
At another occasion, verses were revealed to prove her innocence. Once, while
'A'isha was on a journey with the Prophet, she went for the call of nature and got
delayed. In the meanwhile, people, who carried her howdah, put her curtained
howdah on the back of camel and left without noticing that she was not in it. By
the time 'A'isha came back all had gone, she sat down in the hope that they

would come back for her. The next morning, a Companion who was left behind,
found her sitting and brought her back to Madinah; he made her sit on his camel
and he led the camel by foot. That incident caused a malicious scandal. Allah
revealed the verses of surah Nur to declare her innocence.
A'ishah was the most beloved wife of the Prophet. During his final illness, he
went to stay in her apartment after seeking permission from his other wives. He
died with his head resting on her lap.
A'ishah sided with Talha and Zubair when they rebelled against Ali and asked him
to apprehend the assassins of 'Uthman, and when he failed to do so, she fought
against him in the Battle of Camel.
Aisha RA lived for 48 years after the Prophet. She was married to him for almost
ten years and had spent her time in learning and acquiring knowledge of the
Qur'an and Sunnah from the Prophet with me. She was an eloquent lady of great
intelligence and excellent memory; she narrated 2,210 traditions. Many of these
were concerned with intimate aspects of personal behaviour. Musa Bin Talha
said "I have not seen anybody more eloquent than 'A'isha." (Tirmidhi)
She was considered an authority on the life of the Prophet and interpretation of
the Qur'an. Eminent Companions used to come to her for guidance in religious
matters. "Abu Musa reported when a tradition appeared doubtful to us
(Companions of Prophet), and we asked 'A'ishah about it, we found exposition of
it from her." (Tirmidhi). She died in the year 57 A.H. and was buried in Jannatul-

She was the daughter of Khuzaimah and she was from Bani Hilal bin Amir bin
Sasaah. Her first marriage had taken place with Tufail ibn Harith and second with
Ubaidah ibn Harith; the two were sons of Harith ibn Abdul Muttalib and cousins
of the Holy Prophet. Her third marriage was performed with Abdullah ibn Jahsh
who was also the half cousin of the Holy Prophet. He was martyred in the battle
of Uhud. After that, the Prophet married her out of compassion.
Even before her conversion to Islam, she was known as Umm-ul-Masakeen
(Mother of the Needy) due to her benevolence.
She was the first among the Mothers of the Believers to be buried in Jannat-ul-
Baqi. She lived with the Holy Prophet only for a few months and then passed
away in 627 C.E. at the age of thirty. She and Khadijah are the only two wives of

BIBI UMM-E-SALAMAH RA:

Her real name was Hind bint Abi Umaiyyah. She came from the Makhzum branch
of the Quraish tribe and was the cousin of Khalid bin Waleed. She was among
first Muslim women to migrate to Madinah. Before her marriage to the Prophet,
she was married to Abdullah bin Abdul Assad, known as Abu Salmah.
Both the husband and wife were among the first persons to accept Islam. They
migrated to Abyssinia to escape persecution but returned when they heard a
rumour that the Makkan had accepted Islam. Later they migrated to Madinah.
Abu Salamah was wounded in the Battle of Uhad and died after a long illness.
She did not have anyone to look after her. The Prophet proposed she hesitated
at first saying that she was an old woman, with small children and she easily
became jealous. Later she accepted the proposal; and they were married in the
year 4 A.H.
She was by the side of the Prophet in most of the battles. She narrated incidents
about the ways the Prophet looked after the comforts of his wives.
The Prophet PBUH consulted her in some matters. At the time of Treaty of
Hudaibiyah, the Muslims had to go back without performing umrah and they
were greatly disappointed. The Prophet ordered them to shave their head and
offer sacrifice, but they showed some reluctance to follow his command.
When the Prophet mentioned that to Umm Salamah, she suggested to him to
offer sacrifice and shave his head. When the Muslim saw the Prophet PBUH
doing that, they followed his example.

traditions. 'A'isha RA and Hafsah RA were great friends.
Ubayd ibn 'Umar reported, "I heard 'A'isha saying, "The Prophet used to stay for a
long while with Zaynab bint Jahsh and drink honey at her house. So Hafsah and I
decided that if the Prophet came to anyone of us, she should say to him, I detect
the smell of Maghafir (a nasty smelling gum) in you. Have you eaten Maghafir?"
"So the Prophet visited one of them and she said to him similarly. The Prophet
said, "Never mind, I have taken some honey at the house of Zaynab bint Jahsh, but
I shall never drink of it anymore."

(Sahih Bukhari)
The Prophet married her to consolidate his relationship with 'Umar RA. She was a

"It is your parents who gave you in marriage; but as for me, Allah
