CSS 10 M1Q1 What Is A Computer

1. There are three main types of computers - analog, digital, and hybrid. Analog computers operate on continuously varying quantities while digital computers operate using binary digits. 2. Computers can also be classified by size and capability - from smallest to largest these include microcomputers, minicomputers, mainframes, and supercomputers. 3. Hybrid computers offer aspects of both analog and digital computing by incorporating an analog unit with a digital memory.

What is a computer? A computer is an electronic hardware device.

It operates and functions under the control of instructions called programs stored in it
is memory. People use computers as a means to do certain task and attain target objectives.

What is an Analog Computer?

An analog computer system is a very ancient computer system that operates on mathematical variables in the form of constantly changing physical
quantities/entities. Computing device that works on continuous range of values. An analog computer is a form of computer that operates constantly,
regardless of the input fluctuations. Instability in current, temperature, electric, and mechanical parts are examples of these variances. Thermostats and
thermometers are the greatest examples of analog computers.

What is a Digital Computer?

The digital computer is a type of computer that accepts and computes binary-formatted data. Operates on digital data such as numbers. The binary code is
made up of two digits: 0 and 1. The digital computer can perform various tasks just by manipulating and counting these digits. Supercomputers, Personal
computers, and Minicomputers are all examples of digital computers.

A hybrid computer is a type of computer that offers the functionalities of both a digital and an analog computer. It is designed to include a working analog
unit that is powerful for calculations, yet has a readily available digital memory. In large industries and businesses, a hybrid computer can be used to
incorporate logical operations as well as provide efficient processing of differential equations.

Types of Computers

A. Based on principles of operation:

1. Analog Computers
2. Digital Computers
3. Hybrid Computers
B. Based on Configuration (Size and Capability)
1. Supercomputer – largest and most powerful computers. Most expensive because it is custom-made for the needs of governments
2. Mainframe Computer – large computer that can process data at very high rate of speed. It is mainly used by big businesses and companies
to process and compute large, bulk amounts of data
3. Minicomputer – multi-use machine that is smaller, less expensive and less powerful than mainframe. Used in mid-range businesses and
companies
4. Server – provides services to another computer program and its user, also known as the client.

It depends upon physical variations. It does not depend upon physical variations.
Analog computers provide less accurate results. Digital computers provide more accurate results.
They have high power consumption. They have low power consumption.
They are used in engineering and scientific fields. These are used in almost every field.
Analog computers are not easy to use. Digital computers are easy to use.

5. Microcomputer – probably the most popular kind of computers.

Types of Microcomputers:
a. Desktop Computers -Known as Personal Computers or PCs. They are usually easier to use, upgrade and more comfortable
b. Laptop/Notebook – are portable computers, lightweight computers with a thin screen, battery operated. More expensive than desktop
computers.
c. Tablet computers – handheld portable devices along with touch screen interface, smaller than notebook devices but bigger than
smartphones.
d. Smartphones – touch screen mobile phone that is capable to perform various advance functions similar to computer.
e. PDA Computers – Stands for Personal Digital Assistant. It is a handheld device with great portability as well as smaller in size similar
to tablet, palmtop and smartphone.
f. Game consoles – is a special kind of computer primarily used for playing video games.
g. Modern TVs -Modern Television (internet TVs) with interactive features
h. Wearable computer – is any smart technology device capable of storing and processing data that will be worn on the body.
