• Periya puranam is a one of the great Tamil epic which details the story about the 63 Naayanmars

who worshipped shiva.


• Nayanmars (or Nayanars) (5th - 10th century) were saints from Tamil Nadu whose lives
embodied deep devotion towards Lord Shiva. They sang divine hymns praising the 276 sacred
shrines of Lord Shiva which are called the Paadal Petra Sthalams.
• The birth star day of these 63 Nayanmars is widely celebrated as ‘Guru Puja Day’ in all the Siva
temples in Tamil Nadu.
• Four among the nayanmars were considered as Principal Saivite Saints. Sundarar, Appar,
Sambandar and Manikkavasagar. Their contribution to Saivism was in the form of Tamil literature
called Thirumurai – collection of hymns called Thevaram & Thiruvasagam .
• The 4 saints travelled, visited and sung in several temples throughout southern India and few in
the North.
• These valuable hymns in palm inscriptions were kept unattended in Chidambaram Temple.
• These hymns were restored by King Raja Raja Chozhan and was handed over to his able priest
Nambiandar Nambi which was compiled in to ‘Thirumurai’.
• In 12th CE, Sekkizhar compiled the hymns in to an epic in the form of stories
• Ramayanam & Mahabharatham were translated to Tamil from Sanskrit. Periya Puranam was
translated to Sanskrit as Upamanyu Bhakta Vilas.
