PhET Sandwich Stoichiometry CH

This document describes a series of stoichiometry calculations using a PhET simulation involving sandwiches and chemical reactions. Part I examines cheese sandwiches and determines the number of sandwiches and leftovers that can be made from given amounts of bread and cheese. Part II looks at meat and cheese sandwiches. Part III considers the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to form water. Part IV analyzes the reaction of nitrogen and hydrogen to form ammonia. Part V examines the combustion of methane. The conclusion discusses the concepts of limiting and excess reactants as they apply to these different scenarios.

Conclusion:
ar stu

A reactant that is left over is said to be in excess and those that are used up limit the amount of
product that can be made and are thus called limiting reactants. The maximum number of
sandwiches or molecules you could make is called the theoretical yield. For example, if you had
17 pieces of bread, 7 slices of cheese, and 20 slices of meat, what would the theoretical yield be?
is

Which reactants are in excess and which are all used up and thus limiting reactants?
Th

Theoretical Yield:

- 7 sandwiches because there are only 7 pieces of cheese

sh

Excess Reactants:

- The slices of meat are in excess
