Lab No - 01

This document discusses the design of steel structures. It defines a steel structure as one made from organized combinations of structural steel members designed to carry loads and provide rigidity. It then discusses applications of steel structures such as long span structures, multi-storied buildings, towers, bridges, and deployable structures. Some key advantages of steel structures are their strength, ductility, flexibility, recyclability, and ability to withstand earthquakes and winds. However, steel structures also require more maintenance due to corrosion and have higher initial costs than concrete structures.

Design of Steel Structures

Course Code: CE 3202

Lab No: 01

Presented by-
Nadira Islam Nila
Lecturer, Department of Civil Engineering
Northern University of Business & Technology Khulna
 What is Steel Structure?
A structure which is made from organized combination of structural steel
members designed to carry loads and provide adequate rigidity.

 Application of Steel Structures

 Long span structures
 Multi-storied & high rise buildings
 Buildings of heavy duty plants
 Tower & Mast Structures
 Portal frames
 Bridges

 Deployable structures Fig: Deployable
Structure
 Prominent Features of Steel Structures

 Freedom of expression
 Creativity
 Easy extension
 Easy fixing of façade
 Easy and effective fabrication
 Long span
 No limit of architectural design
 Recycling is possible
 Visible connections
 Why use of Steel Structures?

 High strength (the high ration of strength to weight)

 Excellent ductility and seismic resistance
 Elasticity , uniformity of material
 Ease of fabrication and speed of fabrication
 Susceptibility to corrosion
 Loss of strength at elevated temperature
 Susceptibility to buckling
 Fatigue and brittle fracture
 Advantages of Steel Structures

 Lower project costs

Comparative studies indicate that a structural steel framing system
including decking and fire protection will typically cost 5% to 7%
less than a concrete framing system on a national basis.
 High strength
 Recyclable
Today’s structural steel is made of 88% recycled product, is fully
recyclable in the future and can be reused without further processing.
 Ductility
 Advantages of Steel Structures

 Durability
Steel frames that are used for the construction of buildings and other
infrastructure are made up of mild steel. This steel is long lasting and
strong enough to carry huge tons of weight for many years without
the need of any restoration or repair.
 Flexibility
This helps to design steel structures in such a way that it can
withstand an earthquake or heavy winds, especially in the case of tall
towers or bridges which are made of steel.
 Advantages of Steel Structures

 Temporary structure
Steel frame structures can be easily built with the help of various
methods such as bolting, welding or riveting.
 Aesthetic beauty
 Disadvantages of Steel Structures

 High maintenance costs and corrosion

 High fire proofing cost
 Susceptibility to buckling
 High initial costs
 Less availability
 Difference between Concrete & Steel Structures

 Steel is stronger than concrete.

Compressive strength of Steel 200 MPa
Compressive strength of Concrete 25 MPa
 Steel is more ductile than concrete.
 Steel is factory made and having better quality control than concrete.
 Steel is heavier than concrete.
Unit weight of steel – 8000 kg/m3
Unit weight of concrete – 2500 kg/m3
 Steel is costlier than concrete.
