1. Find the sum of the integers between 100 and 200 that are divisible by 9?

108,117,126.... 198 and so on


So a=108
l=198
n=?
nth term= a + (n-1)
198= 108+(n-1)9
198= 108+9n-9
198-99= 9n
99/9= n
n= 11

Now, sum of n terms


Sum of first 11 terms= 11/2(108+198)
=11/2(306)
=11×153
=1683

2. Pipe A can fill an empty tank in 6 hours and Pipe B in 8 hours . If both the pipes are
opened and after 2 hours pipe A is closed, how much time B will take to fill the
remaining tank?

Pipe A can fill the cistern in 6 hours

1 hour = 1/6 of the cistern

Pipe B can find the cistern in 8 hours

1 hour = 1/8 of the cistern

If both worked together

1 hour = 1/6 + 1/8 = 7/24 of the cistern

2 hours = 7/24 x 2 = 7/12 of the cistern

Find amount of work left after 2 hours

work left = 1 - 7/12 = 5/12 of the cistern

Find the amount of time needed for B to finish the rest of the work:

1 hour = 1/8 of the cistern

Number of hours needed = 5/12 ÷ 1/8 = 10/3 hrs= 3 1/3 hours= 3 hrs 20 mins
3. Four bells toll at intervals of 4, 7, 12 and 84 seconds. The bells toll together at 5 pm.

When will they toll together? How many times will they do it in 28 minutes?

They will toll together for a 'common multiple' of (4,7,12,84), which is the l.c.m of these numbers.
4== 2^2
7 == 7
12 = 2^2 * 3
84 = 12 * 7 = 2^2 * 3 * 7
l.c.m(4,7,12,84) = 2^2 * 3 * 7 = 84 s
84 s = 1 min 24 sec
Hence they will toll together 84 seconds after 5 o'clock or 5:01:24 hrs ( 1 min 24 sec past 5 o'clock)
28 mins = 28*60 = 1680 sec
84 sec== toll 1 time
1680 sec== X times
X = 20 times
Hence,
They toll together at 5:01:24 hrs
In 28 mins they toll (together) 20 times.

4. When writing numbers from 1 to 10,000, how many times is the digit 9 written?

I will take the range from 1 to 9,999 since 10,000 does not contain the digit 9 in it.

Numbers in our range will be in the format abcd

where each letter stands for a digit. Understand that a, b and c could each be 0 which means
we are talking about a single digit number. Similarly if a and b are each 0 and c

is a non zero digit we are talking about 2 digit numbers. You can extend this to think about 3
digit numbers as well as 4 digit numbers.

Now with this idea in the back of your mind, let’s try to count number of 9’s in the one’s
place.

So d is 9. And each of the digits a, b & c can take 10 values (any digit from 0 to 9)

So the number of 9’s in one’s place will be 10 x 10 x 10 = 1000

Now, number of 9’s in ten’s place will also be 1000

Same goes with number of 9’s in hundred’s & thousand’s places as well.

So the number of times the digit 9 occurs is 4000.

From 1 to 10 — 1 time
From 1 to 100 = 1*10 (9,19,29…..) + 10 (90,91,92…..) = 20 times
From 1 to 1000 = 20*10 + 100 (900,901,902…) = 300 times
From 1 to 10000 = 300*10 + 1000 (9000,9001,9002….) = 4000 times.

5. What is the number of times the digit 8 will be written when listing the integers from 1
to 1000?

1-10 = 1
1-100= 10+(1*9) = 19
1-1000 = 100 + (19*9) = 271

6. How many zeros are there from 1 to 10000?


Solution
for solving this problem first we would break the whole range in 5 sections
1) from 1 to 9
Total number of zero in this range = 0
2) from 10 to 99
Total possibilities = 9*1 = 9 ( here 9 is used for the possibilities of a non zero integer)
3) from 100 to 999 - three type of numbers are there in this range
a) x00 b) x0x c) xx0 (here x represents a non zero number)
Total possibilities
for x00 = 9*1*1 = 9, hence total zeros = 9*2 = 18
for x0x = 9*1*9 = 81, hence total zeros = 81
similarly for xx0 = 81
total zeros in three digit numbers = 18 + 81 +81 = 180
4) from 1000 to 9999 - seven type of numbers are there in this range

7. The average age of a family of 5 members is 20 years. If the age of the youngest member
be 10 years then what was the average age of the family at the time of the birth of the
youngest member?

At present the total age of the family = 5 * 20 = 100

The total age of the family at the time of the birth of the youngest member = [100-10-(10*4)] = 50

Therefore, average age of the family at the time of birth of the youngest member = 50/4 = 12.5.

Since its average age of the family at the time of the birth of the youngest member we should
decrease the age of all the member by 10 which is the current age of the youngest member . Hence
100(total age)-10(youngest mem age)-10*4(decreasing the age of other four members)=50 now
taking average divided by 4 gives 12.5

8. What is Aman's present age, if after 20 years his age will be 10 times his age 10 years
back?

Let Aman's present age be x

Aman's age before 10 years = (x - 10)

Aman's age after 20 years = (x + 20)

According to question,

Aman's age after 20 years (x + 20) is 10 times his age 10 years back (x – 10)

Therefore, (x + 20) = 10 (x – 10)

Solving the equation,

we get x + 20 = 10x – 100

9x = 120,

x = 13.3 years

9. A dice has 6 faces. Four such dice are thrown simultaneously. Find the probability that all
of them show the same face.

The total number of elementary events associated to the random experiments of throwing
four dice simultaneously is:

 = 6*6*6*6=216

 n(S) = 216

 Let X be the event that all dice show the same face. 

 X = { (1,1,1,1,), (2,2,2,2), (3,3,3,3), (4,4,4,4), (5,5,5,5), (6,6,6,6)}

 n(X) = 6

Hence required probability = n(X)n(S)=6/216 = 1/216

10. One pipe can fill a tank 6 times as fast as another pipe. If together the two pipes can fill
the tank in 22 minutes, then the slower pipe alone will be able to fill the tank in?

Let the slower pipe alone can fill the tank in x minutes
Then the faster pipe can fill the tank in x/6 minutes
Part filled by the slower pipe in 1 minute = 1/x
Part filled by the faster pipe in 1 minute = 6/x
Part filled by both the pipes in 1 minute = 1/x+6/x

It is given that both the pipes together can fill the tank in 22 minutes⇒ Part filled by both the pipes in
1 minute = 1/22

1/x+6/x=1/22

7/x=1/22

x=22×7=154

i.e., the slower pipe alone fill the tank in 154 minutes

11. Four distinct circles are drawn in a plane. What is the maximum number of points where
atleast two of the circles intersect?

Formula- n*(n-1)=4*3=12

OR

Because a pair or circles can intersect at most times, the first circle can intersect the second at
points, the third can intersect the first two at points, and the fourth can intersect the first three at
points. This means that our answer is 2+4+6=12

12. A series of books was published at seven-year intervals. When the seventh book was
issued, the sum of the publication years was 13,524. When was the first book published?

The years at which books are published are terms of AP where


let first term a be x;
common difference (d) =7
number of terms(n)=7
sum of seven terms(S7)=13524
n/2[2a+(n-1)d]=13524
7/2[2x+6(7)]=13524
2x+6(7)=3864
x=1911
Therefore the first book was published in 1911

According to question,
Books are published at seven years interval,
First edition book published in year = x
Second edition book published in year = x + 7
Third edition book published in year = x + 14
Four edition book published in year = x + 21
Five edition book published in year = x + 28
Six edition book published in year = x + 35
Seven edition book published in year = x + 42
When the seventh book was issued, the sum of the publication year was 13,524.
x + x + 7 + x +14 + x +21 + x + 28 + x + 35 + x + 42 =13524
147 + 7x = 13524
7x = 13524 -147
⇒ x = 13377/7 = 1911

13. How many of the integers from 1 to 88 (inclusive) contain the digit 4 or have the digit sum
divisible by 4?

integers between 1 to 86 contain the digit 4

e.g., 4 , 14, 24, 34 , 40, 41, 42 , 43 , 44 , 45, 46, 47, 48 , 49 , 54 , 64, 74, 84.

total number of integers contain the digit 4 = 18

now we have to find number of integers , have the digit sum divisible by 4.

we know, maximum value of digit sum in case of upto two digit number = (9 + 9) = 18

so, digit sum will be 4, 8, 12, 16 .

case1 :- when digit sum is 4.

possible integers : 13, 22, 31, 40 {excluding integers contain digit 4}

so , number of integers , N1 = 4

case 2 :- when digit sum is 8.

15. Given In this problem A^B means A raised to the power B. What is the tenth digit to the
right of the decimal point, in the decimal expansion of (1/5)^10

Given A^B is A raised to the power B. Now we need to find (1/5)^10

Now 1/5 = 0.2

We know that 2^10 = 1024

So (0.2)^10 = 0.0000001024

OR

(1/5)^10=(2/10)^10=(2^10)/10^10

1024/10^10=0.0000001024
16. A student was asked to divide a number by 6 and add 12 to the quotient. He, however
first added 12 to the number and then divided it by 6, getting 112 as the answer. The
correct answer should have been?

Let the number be x.


As per what he did,
(x+12)/6 = 112
x+12 = 672
x = 672-12 = 660.
So, the correct answer = (660/6)+ 12
= 110+12
= 122.

17. Each student in a class of 40 plays at least one indoor game chess, carrom and
scrabble. 18 play chess, 20 play scrabble and 27 play carrom. 7 play chess and scrabble,
12 play scrabble and carrom and 4 play chess, carrom and scrabble. Find the number of
students who play 1 . chess and carom? 2. chess, carrom but not scrabble?

Let A be the set of students who play chess


B be the set of students who play scrabble
C be the set of students who play carrom
Therefore, We are given n(A ∪ B ∪ C) = 40,
n(A) = 18, n(B) = 20 n(C) = 27,
n(A ∩ B) = 7, n(C ∩ B) = 12 n(A ∩ B ∩ C) = 4

We have -
n(A ∪ B ∪ C) = n(A) + n(B) + n(C) - n(A ∩ B) - n(B ∩ C) - n(C ∩ A) + n(A ∩ B ∩ C)
Therefore, 40 = 18 + 20 + 27 - 7 - 12 - n(C ∩ A) + 4
40 = 69 – 19 - n(C ∩ A)
40 = 50 - n(C ∩ A) n(C ∩ A) = 50 - 40
n(C ∩ A) = 10
Therefore, Number of students who play chess and carrom are 10.
Also, number of students who play chess, carrom and not scrabble.
= n(C ∩ A) - n(A ∩ B ∩ C)
= 10 – 4
=6

18. Two trains running in opposite directions cross a man standing on the platform in 27
seconds and 17 seconds respectively and they cross each other in 23 seconds. The
ratio of their speeds is?

Let the speeds of the two trains be x m/sec and y m/sec respectively. Then, length of the first
train= 27x metres, and length of the second train=17y metres.

∴ (27x+17y)/(x+y) = 23

⇒27x+17y = 23x+23y

⇒4x=6y
⇒x/y=3/2

19. There are 5 violinists, 8 guitarists, and 7 drummers in a music club. A group of 6
students will be chosen to compete in a competition. How many combinations of
students are possible if the group is to consist of an equal number of violinists,
guitarists, and drummers?

Given equal number of musicians to be formed

so only 2 from each music style should be taken

and this is in form on combinations

SO 5C2*8C2*7C2

= (5*2)*(4*7)*(7*3) = 5880 ways can be formed

20. In a mathematical competition consisting of 12 problems, 8 marks are given for each
correct response, 0 marks for each incorrect response and each no response is
awarded 3 marks. Esha scored 35 marks in this competition. The largest number of
incorrect responses she could have had is?
Esha scored a total of 35 marks.
The maximum marks are gained when answers are correct.
So, to find the maximum number of incorrect answers possible we need to find the maximum
number of correct answers and minimum number of no response answers that can score 35 as a
total.

Esha scored a total of 35 marks


So, finding the number of maximum possible correct answer:
8 * x <= 35
x=4
8 * 4 = 32 < 35

So, the remaining 3 marks can be gained by 1 no response answer.


So, keeping the correct answers and no response answers in mind:
The number of answers that are correct or no response = 4 + 1 = 5
So, the remaining answers are incorrect.

The maximum number of incorrect answers possible


= Total number of questions — Answers that are not incorrect
= 12 — 5 = 7 answers

25. 16 teams enter a competition. They are divided into four pools (A, B, C and D) of four
teams each. Every team plays one match against the other teams in its pool.

loan him the money. This is reflected in option A.

Hence, option A is the correct choice.

27. Raj divided 50 into two parts such that the sum of their reciprocal is 1/12 ,we get the parts

As the the ratio of their incomes are in ascending order, and their expenses are in descending order,

29. Sum of 2nd and 19th elements of an arithmetic progression is equal to 8, 12, 15 element of
progression .Then which element of the series should necessarily be equal to zero?

Consider an AP with first term a and common difference d.

Given that,

t2 + t19 = t8 + t12 + t15

(a+d) + (a+18d) = (a+7d) + (a+11d) + (a+14d)

2a + 19d = 3a + 32d

a = -13d

Let nth term of AP have value zero.

tn = 0

a + (n-1)d = 0

-13d + (n-1)d = 0

n-1 = 13

n = 14

Therefore, 14th term of AP will be zero.

Remaining 14 members didnt pass the exam. so, the answer is 14.
