MATH 2277 - INTRODUCTION TO REAL ANALYSIS I

COURSEWORK EXAM II - July 5th, 2021

TIME: 4 HOURS

Total Points: 50

Answer ANY TWO (2) Questions

Note the following:

ˆ You can use class notes and reference textbooks.

ˆ Do not discuss problems with other students in any form.

ˆ If you need clarification about a problem, send an email to [email protected]

ˆ You can use any theorems from the material without proof. However, state clearly which theo-
rem/lemma you are using.

ˆ Upload your solutions in PDF format ONLY, along with the completed Individual Plagiarism

Declaration Form.

1. (a) Determine whether or not the function g : {2π} ∪ [−π, π] → R defined by

e−x sin(x), x 6= 2π
g(x) =
1, x = 2π

is uniformly continuous. [12 marks]

(b) Let {xn } be a sequence of real numbers and x ∈ R. Suppose there exists M ∈ N such that
xn = x for all n ≥ M . Prove that {xn } converges to x. [5 marks]

(c) Determine whether the following series is convergent or divergent

X n +3

n=1
n2 − n + 9

[8 marks]

2. (a) Let M > 0 and f : R → R satisfy the condition |f (x) − f (y)| ≤ M |x − y| for all x, y ∈ R. Show
that f is uniformly continuous on R. [5 marks]

(b) Determine whether or not the sequence {xn } defined by

 nπ
xn = cos + 1, ∀n ∈ N

is convergent. [5 marks]

(c) Consider the real sequence {xn } defined by

1
x1 = − , xn+1 = x2n + xn
2

By using the Monotone Convergence Theorem, prove that {xn } is a convergent sequence.

(Hint: show that − 12 ≤ xn ≤ 0). [15 marks]

3. (a) Let {xn } and {yn } be two sequences of real numbers and x ∈ R. If there exists a k > 0 and
m ∈ N such that |xn − x| ≤ k|yn |, ∀n ≥ m and yn → 0 as n → ∞, prove that xn → x as n → ∞.

[6 marks]

(b) Let {xn } be a bounded sequence. Prove that if {xn } is monotonically decreasing then it con-
verges to its infimum. [9 marks]

(c) Classify the infinite series

X (−1)n+1 5n

as either absolutely convergent, conditionally convergent, or divergent. Clearly state the name
of any convergence test that you use. [10 marks]
