On this great occasion of accomplishment of our project on

TENS Machine for Pain Management, we would like to
sincerely express our gratitude to Dr. D.M. Dhane, Prof. S.P.
Tondare & Prof. Aparna Patil who has been supported through
the completion of this project.

We would also be thankful to them for providing all the

required facilities in completion of this project.

Finally, as one of the team members, I would like to appreciate

all my group members for their support and coordination, I hope
we will achieve more in our future endeavours.
Abstract

In this project we created a prototype of the TENS Machine for Pain

Management by carrying all the research and keeping our objective of
the project in hand. The brief description about the prototype is
mentioned below.

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS or TNS) is the use of

electric current produced by a device to stimulate the nerves for
therapeutic purposes. TENS. It covers the complete range of
transcutaneously applied currents used for nerve excitation although the
term is often used with a more restrictive intent, namely to describe the
kind of pulses produced by portable stimulators used to reduce pain. The
unit is usually connected to the skin using two or more electrodes which
are typically conductive gel pads.
Project Objective

By the commencement of this project, we set different objectives in the

completion of this which are as follow:

• To gain and apply information practically.

• To enhance the working skill.
• To increase productivity.
• To enhance group work roles.
• To prepare the model to work effectively.
Pictorial Representation

Description of the Project

In this project, the main objective was to create a working prototype of

TENS Machine with the availability of all the resources and under the
guidance of our respected guides.

TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation which is a

method of electrical stimulation which primarily aims to provide a degree
of symptomatic pain relief by exciting sensory nerves and thereby
stimulating either the pain gate mechanism and/or the opioid system. The
different methods of applying TENS relate to these different physiological
mechanisms. In the clinical context, it is most commonly assumed to refer to
the use of electrical stimulation with the specific intention of providing
symptomatic pain relief.

The type of stimulation delivered by the TENS unit

aims to excite (stimulate) the sensory nerves, and
by so doing, activate specific natural pain relief
mechanisms. For convenience, if one considers that
there are two primary pain relief mechanisms
which can be activated: The Pain Gate
Mechanism and the Endogenous Opioid System,
the variation in stimulation parameters used to
activate these two systems will be briefly
considered.

Pain relief by means of the pain gate mechanism

A Patient using the TENS
involves activation (excitation) of the A beta (Aβ) Machine for back pain
sensory fibers, and by doing so, reduces the relief.

transmission of the noxious stimulus from the ‘c’ fibers, through the spinal
cord and hence on to the higher centers. The Aβ fibers appear to
appreciate being stimulated at a relatively high frequency HF (in the
order of 90 - 130 Hz or). It is difficult to find support for the concept
that there is a single frequency that works best for every patient, but
this range appears to cover most individuals. Clinically it is important
to enable the patient to find their optimal treatment frequency which
TENS as a treatment technique is noninvasive and has few side effects when
compared with drug therapy. The most common complaint is an allergic
type skin reaction, and this is almost always due to the material of the
electrodes, the conductive gel or the tape employed to hold the electrodes
in place. Most TENS applications are now made using self-adhesive, pre-
gelled electrodes which have several advantages including reduced cross
infection risk, ease of application, lower allergy incidence rates and lower
overall cost.

Apart from the description of the project main, we worked on every

information that was gathered from different sources for the completion of
the project.
Conclusion

At last We would like to conclude the project report. We have come to the
end of the project on the topic TENS Machine. We tried our best to include
all the necessary points that are required related to the given topic. Some
of the information We wrote in the project were taken from the internet and
We have also referred to some books. This project contains information of
TENS Machine, its block diagram, its pictorial representation, its brief
description.
We do hope that my project will be interesting and may be even
knowledgeable.
We are thankful for the guides for giving us this opportunity to work on this
interesting topic.
