DLC Lab 01

The laboratory report describes an experiment conducted by students to identify various integrated circuits (ICs) and verify their truth tables by building circuits using logic gates like XOR, NOT, and NAND. Components like breadboards, ICs, and power supplies were used to build circuits and observe the output based on different input combinations. The results matched the expected truth tables, demonstrating the students' understanding of how basic logic gates function in integrated circuits.

Objective: To study and verify the truth table of logic gates (OR gate, AND gate,
NAND gate, NOR gate, X-OR gate etc.)using integrated circuits.

Theory: The fundamental logic gates serve as the foundation for more
sophisticated logic circuits. The fundamental Boolean operations, including AND,
OR, NAND, NOR, Inversion, Exclusive-OR, and Exclusive-NOR, are carried out by
these logic gates. The circuit symbol, a Boolean function, and more are displayed
in figures below. Each gate in those figures has one binary output (C) and one or
two binary inputs (A and B). The small circle on the output of the circuit symbols
designates the logic complement. More than two inputs can be added to the
AND, OR, NAND, and NOR gates. If the binary action that a gate represents is both
commutative and associative, the gate can be expanded to contain more inputs.

These basic logic gates are implemented as small-scale integrated circuits (SSICs)
or as part of more complex medium scale (MSI) or very large-scale (VLSI)
integrated circuits. In addition to their logic operation, digital IC gates are
categorized according to the particular logic circuit family to which they belong.
Every logic family has a unique fundamental electronic circuit that is built upon to
create more intricate digital circuits and operations. The most popular logic
families are the ones listed below.

TTL Transistor-transistor logic

ECL Emitter-coupled logic

MOS Metal-oxide semiconductor

CMOS Complementary metal-oxide semiconductor

TTL and ECL are based upon bipolar transistors. TTL has popularity among logic
families. ECL is only employed in systems that need to operate at high speeds. The
foundation of MOS and CMOS is the field effect transistor. Due to their great
component density and relatively low power consumption, they are frequently
utilized in large integrated circuits. Compared to MOS logic, CMOS logic uses a lot
less electricity. Commercial integrated circuit chips come in many different
varieties. TTL ICs are often divided into the 5400 and 7400 series according to
their numerical identification.
Components Required:
 Breadboard /Trainer board.
 DC power supply.
 Connecting wires.
 Integrated Circuits. SN74HC86N(XOR),SN74HC04N(NOT),
SN74HC00N(NAND) etc.
Experimental Setup:
 To verify the truth table of a logic gate, the suitable IC is taken and the
connections are given using the circuit diagram.
 For all the ICs, VCC is applied to the pin 14 while the pin 7 is connected to
the ground.
 We connect the input and output. The 1, 2 pins of SN74HC00N are going to
be our input pins which we connect with the 0 and 1 data switches of the
trainer board. Next we connect the output of the IC which is pin 3 with the
LED display. Now our circuit is ready and we are ready to conduct our
experiment.

Fig: Designed circuit.

Procedure:
 The logical inputs of the truth table are applied and the corresponding
output is noted.
No. IC Inputs Output
1. SN74HC86N 00 0
01 1
10 1
11 0
2. SN74HC04N 0 1
1 0
3. SN74HC00N 00 1
01 1
10 1
11 0

 Similarly the output is noted for all other combinations of inputs.

 In this way, the truth table of a logic gate is verified.

Fig: Datasheets of used ICs.

Result: According to the results of our experiment, the truth table of an X-OR
logic gate circuit perfectly matches with the 1 st IC outputs, 2nd IC outputs shows
the truth table of NOT gate and lastly 3 rd IC also has a perfect match with truth
table of NAND gate.
Discussion: In this lab experiment, we built circuits using some basic logic gates to
analyze how a logic circuit works with different logic gates. And then we also
investigated the circuits in order to fill out the truth tables verify according to the
datasheets. In this lab, we investigated at how the fundamental logic gates work
and learned how to put them into action using integrated circuits on a
breadboard. To check that the results matched the truth table of the associated
logic gate, we checked the LEDs attached to the output pins of ICs.
Precautions:
 VCC and ground pins must not be interchanged while making connections.
Otherwise the chip will be damaged.
 The pin configuration for a gate is different from other gates. So we should
work with the datasheets in our hands.
