Mid Term - Paper Dom PDF

The document is a mid-term examination for a mechanical engineering course covering topics related to dynamics of machines. It contains 6 questions worth a total of 30 marks. The questions assess understanding of concepts like static equilibrium, slider crank mechanisms, engine torque calculations, governor operation and dynamics principles. Students are asked to show working, make reasonable assumptions if data is missing, and submit responses within 2 hours including uploading time. Late submissions will be penalized.

Department of Mechanical Engineering

Mid Term Examination, March 2022
Subject – DOM Date – 09/03/2022
B.Tech II Year Time – 2 hours
(Including uploading of response)
Maximum marks = 30

Note: 1. Attempt any 5 questions

2. Marks will be deducted for late submission
3. Assume and mention any suitable data if missing
Q. No. Question Marks
1. For the mechanism shown below find the torque magnitude and direction required to 6
be applied on link AB to maintain the static equilibrium condition for the given
configuration. Take P = (200 + last two digits of your roll number) Newton.
(For example, if your roll number is U20ME157, Take P = 200+57 = 257 N)

2. The value of force applied to slider 4 is (250+Last three digit of your roll number) 6
N in the slider crank mechanism shown in the following Fig. For Example: If your
Roll number is U20ME206 then value of the force at slider 4 would be 456N. The
dimensions of the various links are:
AB=80 mm, BC=240 mm, θ=60°
Determine the forces on various links and the driving torque T2 to maintain the static
equilibrium condition.
3. For a reciprocating engine placed horizontally consider the following data: 6
Engine speed = 750 RPM
Length of connecting rod = 400 mm
Length of stroke = 200 mm
Radius of gyration of connecting rod = 120 mm
Distance of center of gravity of connecting rod from bigger end = 160 mm
Mass of connecting rod = 100 kg
Mass of reciprocating parts = 125 kg
When the crank is turned 30 ͦ find the turning moment on the crank using analytical
approach.
4. The torque exerted on the crank shaft of a two stroke engine is given by T (N-m) = 6
1000 x (last two digit of your roll number) + 2500 sin 2θ – 2000 cos 2θ (For
example if your roll number is U20ME060 then T = 60000 + 2500 sin 2θ – 2000 cos
2θ N-m). Engine speed is 180 RPM and speed variation is not to exceed 5% of the
mean speed. If θ is crank angle measured from IDC find:
i.) Power of engine
ii.) Maximum fluctuation of energy
ii.) Moment of inertia of flywheel

5. A porter governor has all four arms 250 mm long. The upper arm and lower arm is 6
pivoted to links of 40 mm and 50 mm respectively from the axis of rotation. The mass
of each ball is 3 kg and the sleeve mass is 50 kg. For extreme radii of 125 mm and
150 mm determine the range of speed of the governor if friction on the sleeve is 40
N.
6. Explain briefly: 6
a) D`Alembert`s principle
b) Principle of virtual work
c) Working of Watt governor
