Let’s Explore and Discover

Have you ever felt like you were being manipulated to do

something?
You probably were. There is always the chance that it was
all in your head, and you just felt like you were being used. But
▪ Propaganda – it is not unlikely that someone made use of your emotions to get
publicly to promote something they needed.
something: It makes sense if someone you know personally was able
information put out to do that but did you know strangers often manage to influence
by an organization of you too? It’s true! How? Through propaganda in advertising.
government to In this lesson, you will learn different types of propaganda
promote policy, idea, in advertising and how it is often used to manipulate your
o cause. buying decisions.
▪ Advertising - one of -Types Propaganda Techniques-
the most wide spread
form of propaganda. 1. Card-Stacking Propaganda 4. Testimonial Propaganda
2. Name-Calling Propaganda 5. Transfer Propaganda
3. Bandwagon Propaganda 6. Glittering Generalities
Propaganda

1. Card-Stacking Propaganda
Card stacking presents selective information to paint an incomplete and incorrect
narrative to influence people.
Example: This ad uses stats to portray why the product
is healthy. MISSY Chips are better than ‘regular
chips’ because they contain 30% less fat than said
chips.
But what if the amount of fat in regular chips
is so high that 30% less is still very dangerous for
you?

MISSY PROPAGANDA INTENTION

To promotes the products, appear than they
actually are.

2. Name-Calling Propaganda
It is based on putting the other party down. Employing this technique in advertising
normally starts brand wars. It can be light-hearted, but sometimes the hatred can get
intense. This is quite self-explanatory. Although the
Example: name of the rival brand (McRonald’s) is not found
anywhere in the ad, their signature Big Mac box
has been used.
And the message is clear: The Whopper is
so big that it can’t fit into the box that holds the
Big Me. So basically, you are getting a bigger
burger than the famous Big Mac.
PROPAGANDA INTENTION
Creates negative opinion about another
brand, where they showdown other product through
advertisement.
2
3. Bandwagon Propaganda
Type of propaganda technique that persuade costumers by telling them that others
are doing the same thing. The bandwagon phenomenon creates a sense of isolation and
triggers FOMO (fear of missing out) in specific people who long to be part of some desirable
group.
Example: This is a classic bandwagon propaganda
advertising example.
After all, if they’ve served 1 million, there must be
something special there, right? And who would want
to miss out on that? So instead of just driving past
and honoring the no-fast-food promise you made to
yourself, you stop and grab a meal on your way home.

PROPAGANDA INTENTION
Persuade the target audience to become a part
of the “in crowd.”
4. Testimonial Propaganda
This form of propaganda uses well-known or credible figures to influence the target
audience.
Example: Ken Dela Cruz has great skin. One look at
“Acne Zero is a game his face is enough to tell you that. He is also a
changer”
-Ken Dela Cruz huge superstar with a massive following.
“It’s not just treating your
acne. You’re taking care of PROPAGANDA INTENTION
your skin at the same time”
To endorse product and services that use
popular personality.

5. Transfer Propaganda
The agenda behind this tactic is to irrationally tie the audience’s positive associations
to a completely unrelated concept. Transfer propaganda relies on symbolism to push its
target audience to make illogical connections.
Example: In this advertisement, the advertiser tells the
Muer consumer that this is the ‘real Filipino fragrance
Muer.’ What does this do? It implies that if you buy
it, you are a true Filipino. And if you don’t? Well, the
rest is self-explanatory.

PROPAGANDA INTENTION
It tries to "transfer" the good or bad feelings you
have associated with something to their brand, product
or services.

6. Glittering Generalities Propaganda

Glittering generalities employs loaded words and strong slogans to leave an impact
on the audience receiving the message.
Example: The use of the word ‘better’ in this ad is what
triggers a positive reaction. We are always looking for ways
to make things better, make experiences better. And that
is what this ad promises. And it doesn’t even stop at food –
it isn’t even mentioned.
So anything, ranging from a pizza to a movie to a
day out gets better with a KoLa Koka.
PROPAGANDA INTENTION
To persuade audience. It uses emotional or vague
statements which makes product look appealing and results
in better sales.
