Language and literature: Word building (adjectives and verbs)

1 You can change the meaning of a word by adding a prefix (a group of letters). But be careful:
adding a prefix doesn’t always change the word to its opposite meaning. Complete the table
with the meanings of the prefixes. Use the words in the box.

4 Read the text. Then match the names 1–3 with a–d to make sentences. You won’t need one of the options.

3 James c becomes a vampire in the film.
d is a vampire but doesn’t drink people’s blood.

Twilight the movie

Bella Swan isn’t like other teenagers. She doesn’t have the same interests as the other girls at her
high school in Phoenix, Arizona, and she doesn’t want to. When 1her mother finds a new husband and
Bella moves back to her father’s home in Washington, she doesn’t expect her life to change very much.
But she is very wrong.
In her new town, Bella starts high school. There she meets Edward Cullen, one of the pupils. 2He isn’t the
same as any other boy she’s ever met. In fact, he’s very different. Although she thinks he’s unfriendly at
the beginning of the film, they become friends and Bella realizes that she 3has been wrong about him.
As Bella and Edward fall in love, Bella starts to learn some strange things about him. He can stop a
moving car with his hands and can run faster than a lion. His skin is always freezing cold. And 4he hasn’t
got older since 1918. A human can’t do these things. Bella discovers that Edward is a vampire.
However, Edward isn’t a typical vampire. He hasn’t got long teeth – that’s only in films – and he doesn’t
drink blood from humans! But although he loves her, he finds the smell of Bella’s blood almost irresistible.
They have the added problem that Bella’s father doesn’t agree with their relationship.
But the trouble really starts 5when a visitor that Edward didn’t know about comes to town. This visitor,
James, is also a vampire and has an unhealthy appetite for Bella. James bites her. Will she now become
a vampire, too?

Edward can save Bella if he takes out the poison from James’s bite. But then she can only spend her
lifetime with him and not eternity. Edward’s love for Bella influences his decision. If you don’t know the
end of the story, I won’t tell you. Watch the film and find out!
