(2) Verb that end in a vowel 1 vowel -> 2 consonants One-syllable verbs:

(exception for –w and -x) Rob robbing robbed

2 vowels-> 1 consonant Rain raining rained


Fool fooling fooled
Dream dreaming dreamed
1st syllable stressed -> 1 consonant Two-syllable verbs:
(Exception: -w and -x) Listen listening listened
Offer offering offered
Open opening opened

2nd syllable stressed-> 2 consonant Prefer preferring preferred
Control controlling controlled
(3) Verbs that end in two Just add the ending Start starting started
consonants Fold folding folded
Demand demanding demanded
(4) Verbs that end in –Y -y + a vowel -> keep the “–y” Enjoy enjoying enjoyed
Buy buying (bought)
Play playing played
-y + a consonant: Study studying studied
_ING form: keep “-y”, add “_ing” Try trying tried
ED form: change “–y” to “-I”, ass “_ed” Reply replying replied

(5) Verbs that end in “_IE” _ING form: Change “-ie” to “-y”, add –ing Die dying died
_ED form: Add –d Lie lying lied
